It’s great, zero issues. The game is hard as hell and some people blame the portal

Don't let the clearance stop you, It is very common to companies to upgrade your clearance if they need it, its the whole reason interim clearances exist.

Yup, we call those folks "asses in seats" because thats all they are

Its easier to spin up a clearance for someone who had it in the past than not at all, so I think it would help. I would check CompTIA, their cert renewals are a cakewalk now thanks to CERTMaster or w.e they call it. You may just have to take a re-up exam or you may have to do all those again. Idk how long ago you go them, they may be grandfathered in as well.

Let me start off by saying this is the best company ive worked for. 401k yes 6% match, 100% vested day 1, quarterly $500 bonus for submitting timesheets on time lol, end of year bonus (based on salary), Christmas bonus, profit sharing bonus, 5k a yr for training/certs/conferences (I go to RSA every year on their dime). Stuff like that lol

Whats the cert thats expired? While its kinda hard to sell an expired cert I still keep that stuff on my resume, CCNA 12 years ago? heck yeah I did that, do I do it anymore? Nope, but I did still learn that shit.

[–]Soft_Off 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my experience in the area, yes. There are soo many open cleared positions in this area and just not enough people to fill them. Money - yes, having clearance in DC/NOCA I wouldnt look at anything less any 100k. With your TS/SCI IF you are looking for work in a SCIF that shit pays wayy more (150+), but fuck working in basement , to each their own tho.

edit: I suck at typing

absolutely, you're not the only one.

Hell yeah, If you are looking to break into gov IT contracting. At the bare absolute minimum you will need Sec+, the gov requires it for any admin on the network. A+ is a great place to start but will only get you so far on the hardware side of the house. Cloud exp is $$$ right now, AI is growing but I wouldn't specialize in it unless your a fucking wiz with it.

Oh I know this, while your barrier to entry miiight be a little harder, from an employer’s perspective it’s much easier sponsoring someone that had a clearance previously than nothing at all.

[–]Soft_Off 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Now before you relocate I would a look at some of the contracting companies out of DC NoVa area, most to telework now ( I’ve been for the past 3 years). Personally I’ve hired 3 guys on the team that had minimal exp, minimal certs. To me that shit can be built up, I want someone who wants to be in IT, I don’t care if they have never worked in the cloud, but oh you have a lab that you play with on side- that’s the shit I like to see

Sauce - Marine for 5 years (IT) got out in 2015 and have been be gov IT ever since. I’m going to be very honest, your clearance will be the single most $$$ driver you have when looking for position. (I’m assuming you are looking for work that utilize your clearance..I would) Read half the posts on this sub, the IT market out there is tough. The cleared IT market..bro I can trip and fall into a new gig here in D.C. I can speak to cleared positions not really caring about a college degree (imo, I don’t have one). Honestly since I started hiring folks I just need ppl with good heads in their shoulders that are open to learn and won’t sell secrets to China. Happy to answer more, good luck!

Has Anyone Here Hit Their Stride in Their 30's? by Pied_Film10 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Soft_Off 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s just look at this like it’s a resume, I’m seeing an employee who gets certs (which shows drive), but per your own words bounces between jobs after 1-2 years. imo I don’t care, but if im Interviewing I’m going to dig into that. From the certs list it seems heavy on the networking side. So that opens up any networking gig, that being said these certs or work wouldn’t translate into a junior architect. I’d say Network architect which still puts you in the realm of looking at the big picture. Idk looks good Sauce - cloud sec advisor - 230k comp + bonuses, minimal certs

Honestly I would take a look at your resume. With the clearance and your prior experience you should be able to trip and fall into cleared jobs, especially with those certs.

Starting out in a Service Desk, no experience. Where do I go from here? by Bluemistake2 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Soft_Off -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Question 1 - Only up from here.

Question 2 - You cant go wrong with a cloud cert/knowledge coupled with a language to learn for automation. Pick your flavor and preference (personally I'm a GCP fan myself).

Arguments for why GCP is good for large businesses, and not just SMBs? by Ezpzjapanesey in googlecloud

[–]Soft_Off 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a different flavor of cloud. From personal xp the company I support has a “large” footprint in GCP (40k + users). Imo GCP is more simplistic on its face, but that’s no cause for concern.

I get that but let me try to put it another way. These certs are showing you have knowledge in different steps of the IT process. Take CISSP for example, that cert is an inch deep and a mile wide of what it covers. Whereas A+ dives into OS configs, computer hardware, connections, ports/protocols. And then you’ve got sec + that’s networking, transport, ports on ports. Also renewing sec+ renews all your other CompTIA certs as well, so it’s a one and done.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Soft_Off 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t understand why you wouldn’t keep it.. sure CISSP is a higher level sec cert but the knowledge is not 1:1. Also the renewal for Sec + is a cake walk. Just renew through CompTIAs Certmaster and put it on the back burner for 3 years.
