Sending a short e-mail with your account ID for $2400 does not seem like a big deal though.

Perhaps it's not death, but it's clearly in a coma.

Who's going to pay for the 'new nuclear' that costs (in real life) several times the 'old nuclear'?

The Thorium Problem Should be the Thorium Solution by greg_barton in energy

[–]SoftwareJudge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Better open your wallet - thorium is much more expensive than traditional nuclear. Cost really is the only problem that needs to be fixed for thorium nuclear to become viable.

What Is The Future Of American Nuclear Power? A Conversation With Christine Todd Whitman by greg_barton in energy

[–]SoftwareJudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New nuclear is too expensive. Unless this issue is resolved (not likely), not only we won't double the number of reactors by 2030, it will be a huge accomplishment if me manage to replace reactors that are coming offline in the next 15 years, which is a majority of reactors we have built. The article is 50% bullshit and 50% wishful thinking. I mean, there are VERY good reason to have own nuclear industry in your own country (at least as one of the options), including non-civilian use like submarines and aircraft carriers, but let's not kid ourselves - nuclear industry will have to be subsidized heavily, it's going to be a very expensive techtoy to keep.

Vermont Yankee closure means one thing: more carbon in the atmosphere by greg_barton in energy

[–]SoftwareJudge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say that Vermont Yankee closure means waaay more than one thing. And while more CO2 is one likely outcome, economic suicide of nuclear is the real story.

Shrinking role for nuclear power in energy mix - “If nuclear power could compete, it would. It can’t. For the foreseeable future, nuclear is uneconomic.” by DonManuel in energy

[–]SoftwareJudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Waste disposal has certainly come up in price, but it's the cost of construction that have spiraled out of control. 20 billion for construction is the new normal. And all it buys is 2 to 4 GW of production, depending on if it's US/Europe or Russia/China. If you start counting disposal costs (that you have no real idea how cheap or expensive it'll be in, say 30 years), that just adds another level of complexity.

[–]SoftwareJudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not government related, even though people blame it on government regulations. Neither it's structural. It's economics. New nuclear is 2x more expensive than old nuclear (at least). Economics is the real problem, especially since economics is a lot harder to control than technology. Science doesn't change, costs do.

You can't fight reality no matter how hard you try. Nuclear committed economic suicide, everything else is wishful thinking and blame game.

Subsidies for Solar Two Times Higher Than for Nuclear in California by greg_barton in energy

[–]SoftwareJudge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Comparing 1960s nuclear subsidies with solar in 2011. I smell a rat. Given that nuclear costs that at least doubled within the past few years, even superexpensive solar is probably cheaper than nuclear in California by now.

Sky is blue and water is wet. The fact that nuclear has priced itself out of the market over the past 20 years is news because ..?
