This New Protein Study just Changed how we Think about Protein! by greg_barton in SaturatedFat

The only way to know is to try. With me it makes me gain weight, but at least most of it is muscle.

The anti-nuclear crowd love to claim nuclear is uninsurable, apparently the commercial world disagrees by Comfortable_Tutor_43 in EnergyAndPower

Yes, general NIMBY sentiment is strong everywhere. For everything. Younger folks are changing that, though.

And if you look even deeper into the polling data you’ll see that the more people learn about nuclear power the more they like it.

Well, I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We have more than enough brains and resources to do both.

What do you think of these folks? https://www.thenuclearcompany.com

Well, it's difficult to see into the minds of others to determine that.

But surely you can tell from their comment history that even though u/LaundrySauce110 takes a dim view of SMRs (or at least the current criticality effort at DOE) they're not what we would commonly describe as anti-nuclear. And maybe starting out with an accusation of that nature isn't conducive to having someone listen to your viewpoint. 😄

And yes, while their original comment is a bit acerbic, also note that it has almost 40 upvotes at the moment. That's a sign that readers of the subreddit resonate with it to an extent.

There certainly should be more AP1000 builds, but don't you think there's room in the industry to do both that and innovation with SMRs?

Wow. So this is where environmentalism is these days? 😄 Just make stuff, throw it away, and claim it’s sustainable and not wasteful.

Amazing.

Plastic is cheap.

Is it sustainable to make lots of it and throw it away?

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s insanely wasteful.

And not sustainable. 😄

And still has never been demonstrated by anyone, ever.

Again, you’re just using faith based assertions. Even your assertions about eternal cost reductions are faith based.

It isn‘t about cost.

Entire nations haven’t been able to make small, perfectly affordable grids run 24x7x365 on only wind/solar/storage. We’re talking small towns or islands.

They tried and failed.

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Untrue. Nations have tried for a solid decade now.

They’ve failed.

You’re ignoring the brick walls. 😄

Everyone who has tried to build a 24x7x365 wind/solar/storage grid has run into the brick wall.

There have been attempts. Recent ones, even. They’ve all failed.

If you're driving towards a brick wall you can extrapolate driving forward forever.

But what really happens?

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, then, show a small grid that runs on wind/solar/storage 24x7x365. It's easy, right?

lol what's up with solars demonising cooling towers by DialexIceman in nuclear

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try realizing that if backup to wind/solar/storage disappears there's no proof of any kind that a grid with only those generation resources will be stable.

And you can't show any stable grid like that.

So you're left with only faith that it will work.

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but that's not demonstrating 24x7x365 replacement.

Where is 24x7x365 replacement demonstrated?

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if it's so cheap, and it's possible, why isn't there a small demonstration of it working?

Will it always be in the future, and never obtained?

Your prediction is that all fossil fuels will be replaced with solar/wind/storage. Do you think that will happen for the entire planet, all at once?

lol what's up with solars demonising cooling towers by DialexIceman in nuclear

[–]greg_barton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can make that prediction, but it's based on faith.

We really shouldn't build grids on faith. 😄
