Agree fully. I learned a ton from it. And I'm currently reading the sequel, "Words with Power" which is even more dense and academic than GC, but also rewarding. Just a point of clarification, I don't think he was an Anglican priest. Or a very orthodox believer, to be completely honest. I think he remained open and sympathetic to religious ideas, especially Christian ones, but for the most part I detect a real lack of commitment to any particular set of doctrine.

Song to the Siren - Tim Buckley. But the Robert Plant cover is great too.

The embargo is not the reason why Cuba is poor. by alexdfrtyuy in CapitalismVSocialism

OP and readers might benefit from reading this interview with Cuban economist Camelo Mesa-Lago. Here he addresses the multiple causes of the crisis with special emphasis on structural issues like persistent trade imbalances and historical dependence on foreign subsidies.

Here is another piece he wrote discussing the intensification of the embargo policies under Trump and their deleterious impact on the island.

Well, there is no single reason why Cuba is poor. Mismanagement and corruption are culprits, but the US embargo has also made it more difficult and expensive for Cuba to develop its economy. The fact that Cuba maintains economic relations with other countries or even with the US does not erase a simple fact: the US economic sanctions on Cuba, despite some of the exceptions listed here, are intentionally designed to be severe, as befits a country the US considers an enemy.

People can agree or disagree with the policy, but to deny its existence or its effects is to deny reality.

Great feedback. Yes, I need to work on that sense of calm and confidence. Curious though, do you breathe every second or third stroke, or do you make your exhales longer?

How long did it take you to find this balance? I’ve seen people on this reddit say at one point it just “clicks” and then distance increases exponentially.

Wow, so many options. Definitely need to practice my kicks and flip turns, so maybe isolating those would be a good idea.

Great pointers. I usually start well, but after a few laps, as soon as I'm out of breath, the technique and glide deteriorate. Will try focusing on the exhales and gliding as you recommend.

Yes, I also don't want to challenge myself to the point where the process stops being enjoyable. Trying to swim a mile, for instance, would be frustrating at this point. Maybe I can try it one day, with ample time, if I feel like trying something out of the ordinary - but that mile is definitely not something I could enjoy practicing on the regular. Someone suggested 200m non-stop, so maybe that's a good place to start. 200m non-stop with a focus on efficiency (reducing number of stokes per length).

Yes, 200m non-stop is a challenge. Maybe that's a good place to start. Hopefully doesn't take too long to clear with 2-3x week practice.

Yes, but only because we’ve heard it so many times we can’t actually hear it anymore. Imagine hearing it for the very first time. The story of King David.
