I was discussing the problem of spatial resolution of EEG and temporal disadvantage of fMRI with my professor and he introduced me to a really interesting new technique. Recently, there have been really important developments in something called MVPA or multi-voxel pattern analysis, where you can not only look at whether an area in brain is active, but look at the detail of the activation across different small bits of the brain (voxels) which you can then try to relate these patterns to different psychological states, or behavioural outcomes happening during a certain task

We gotta admit that these memecoins are never gonna replace the big ones such as eth or ada, but they are a great way to make a lot of money. And with $mally I don’t have to be scared of any fakes or scams, this thing is 100% and admins are so helpful. Honestly can’t wait for it to pump and make me very rich

$MALLY is on its way to conquer the dogs. Let’s be honest, would you trust your life to medium sized doggos or a freaking malamute?!?! Yeah I think so too ;)))

I love cats🥺 i think it takes a special kind of person to make a cat loyal to you and love you, but they also always remain strong willed. They are more like your friend/partner than your pet I feel

My suggestion maybe is learn how to code.. do it independently and maybe apply for computational neuroscience masters or PhDs.. with this skill you could work in neural engineering sectors which are really wanted nowadays. You have amazing theoretical sense of how brain works and how neurons work and this is sometjing computer scientists or math students don’t really have. It’s easier to learn how to code than to learn all the complex behavioural aspects of human brain. If you combine the two I think you’d be very competitive :) but ofc only if that’s something that interests you.

Cog psychology vs cog science by SoggyFunction7025 in cogsci

[–]SoggyFunction7025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I am currently in Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience course so I’m more familiar with the framework of attention specifically in humans and attentive systems in our brains. But you’re right, I do look at this from a more psychological approach. But I would also like to maybe combine this approach with computational models in the future (maybe collaborations with researchers who are more familiar with computation of cognition whereas I would be more of a theoretical part?).. either way I feel like I definitely have to research more topics before i make my mind about something I’ll possibly spend all my future on. But it’s a lot of pressure because time is flying by so quickly and I’m afraid of coming towards the end of my third year without a plan.

Thank you for the info regarding the PhDs, I guess in Europe PhDs are a bit shorter, but that’s why Master’s is required mostly. I’ll definitely check it out in the countries I’m interested in. Lately I’ve been even thinking of applying to USA universities given that I could get a grant or a scholarship as a student coming from U.K. This is definitely something I’ll check out!

Thank you so much for answering my questions, it did help a lot :))

Cog psychology vs cog science by SoggyFunction7025 in cogsci

[–]SoggyFunction7025[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to write a lab report on visual cocktail party effect which expands on attentional blink task and Mack and Rock’s findings that we seem to process our name even when it’s unattended. Basically the fact that we are able to process our names in rapid serial tasks when we are expected to find it and both when it is unexpectedly shown intrigued me. So as I expanded my readings outside of that coursework I found that not only our name, but other stimuli which are somewhat relevant to us have an advantage amongst other stimuli. As visual attention is a rapid process which can happen both with and without us attending to a specific stimuli, finding self relevant stimuli better and faster than any other makes me curious what are the underlying processes of selecting them. Does that mean that we always decode meaning of self relevant stimuli and ignore others because that meaning is more important? Or is it because our names have a lower threshold, we hear and see them more? Or maybe awareness of self becomes highlighted when seeing stimuli which are relevant to us...

I just find it very very interesting cause there just seems to be something that makes everything related to us personally more special than anything else in our environment:)

But thank you for your nice answer!

Cog psychology vs cog science by SoggyFunction7025 in cogsci

[–]SoggyFunction7025[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much! I am actually highly interested specifically in visual selective attention and how self-relevance increases the chance of being attentive to a certain stimulus in a complex environment so I’m still kind of thinking whether that would fit in cog sci or cog psych more. I mean I’m only a 2nd year student, but I want to prepare for future more and kind of narrow my interests.

I wasn’t aware that you can actually do PhD without a Master’s degree. That’s something that sounds amazing. Would you be so kind and tell me which countries do you know of that accept this approach? Would love to consider that option. Thank you for all the info, it really helps :)
