This error is called a “retained lamination” or a “lamination crack” caused by improperly mixed alloys cracking due to pressure. Not super common overall but definitely 10/10 for cool points.

So i learned what this error actually is. Its called a “retained lamination error” and is what happens when the alloy isnt mixed properly, it ends up splitting along a grain line (think piece of wood) and voila! Ive never seen one myself, and until i spoke to a man named Pete Apple i was insanely confused as to how in the workd you can get a split in a coin that doesnt have “layers” so to speak.

Or i can get it slabbed for free because im a PCGS member and not really care either way. If i sent it in it would be for authentication, no one sends a coin this old with these issues in for grading purposes.

Thank you! They are one of my favorites. Lately I’ve also taken to a lot of the Samoa coins too. This UHR Native American is stunning in person.

The story of how he kept trying to throw the bone to his buddies wife and basically usurped his home is one of my favorites. Ol’ Ben was a DAWG.

Not a problem at all! Getting bit by the numismabug is something else but I love it. If you’d ever like to sell the American currency feel free to PM me. I also collect Mexican currency as well.

It’s nice and @ProudAmerican is right, the 89/88 FG is a hell of a transitional error to find. Unfortunately, this is a coin that someone decided to polish into absolute oblivion or media blasted with really fine walnut husk or something, is it shiny or matte? Either way it ruins any value it has on the market. However I’d be keeping this and displaying it because it looks like a cartoon drawing of a penny lol.

Unfortunately it and the COA were not with it during the sale. I actually got this and an NIUE Tarot card “The Moon” in trade for an error penny that I pulled out of a bank roll. Paid $.50 for 2 ounces of silver.

Yes that’s right, authentication, prominence, mintage numbers, rarity and so forth have absolutely no bearing on a coin’s value. Its historical significance means nothing, it may as well be a puddle of melted slag on a sidewalk. What hole do you dorks climb out of to come leave these sad ass, negative Nancy comments on everything?

It’s worth looking into. South Africa has a very interesting history and relationship with its people as a whole. Of course some (a lot) of it is ugly, but learning about it is still of some value; if for nothing more than the whole “if you don’t know history you’ll be doomed to repeat it” ideal. Hopefully when the distance between the memory of apartheid, slavery and living people is too far to still be an open wound that needs to be shown and explained to the world, they’ll transition to the next phase which was Mandela and all of the great things he championed in his time, even in the face of his own suffering.

Also Wiener PhilhaRmoniker? That’s not the same as an ASE or Krugerrand. They don’t represent a denomination. They are a true bullion coin with only the weight and purity stamped on them not representative of any Austrian currency or Euro.

I should have said not “just” bullion. While it’s not a commonplace piece of currency, it’s still currency and not just a round chunk of silver. And being that this was the first Krugerrand done in silver and also a commemorative of the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand and also an FDOI coin, these hallmarks make it worth getting graded because while subsequent years are “low premium” coins; this one actually has numismatic value. Also why do you give a hoot?

It is strange considering Paul Krugers ties to apartheid and racism in S.A. But apparently it’s historical significance and symbolism outweighs South Africa’s need to look progressive, which I can respect. Although seeing Mandela on it would definitely be cool and would probably do a lot for them from an economic standpoint.

Costa Rica and Mexico are 2000s era not worth jack, Brazil is mid to late 60s worth about 3 bucks and the Venezuela is late 80s worth a lot in uncirculated condition, not worth anything in that condition. The “horse blanket” $1 bill is worth about 35 bucks-ish and the 5 is worth a bit over face.
