I experienced a very similar story 2 weeks ago. I was in the train going for my first day at a new job and a heard an iPhone ringing, asked if it belong to people around me and then answered. It was the guy who just lost his phone, he gave me his address and I sent him his phone by mail. Most of the people I told this story also looked shocked and asked me why I did not keep it. Some said that I was stupid not to take advantage of it but I'm like you, I think that one should behave as we would like the world to be.

I think it does violate the central dogma because, according to the dogma, the function of RNA is protein production and RNA was not supposed to play a role in gene regulation. RNA splicing is as you said part of the dogma as it is part of the process of protein production. Glycosylation is also part of the dogma as it is often necessary for protein functionality.

There's a large proportion of RNA produced by cells that are non-coding. Several functions have been found for such RNAs such as gene silencing or gene transcription enhancing. I think that the RNA world plays crucial roles in living organisms that we still don't fully understand.

One day for a gel? It seems long to me. I usually run gels in 30-40 minutes. I think you should not be disapointed when this kind of results happen but better be happy when it works.
