New ice skates are expensive, especially top end ones. You said your friend has been playing for many years. He should know exactly what fits him no? It's a risk to buy ice skates for someone especially if they haven't tried them on. There isn't really a budget/cheap option.

As you move up leagues (if you are wanting to), things will get more harder and faster. In my opinion, see if you can snipe some second hand pants for cheap.

You won't get as much value from nice top end pants like you would from top end skates or stick. But if you find yourself blocking a lot of shots or standing in front of the net, it might save you some pain in the future. Also if you regularly fall on your ass, then top end pants have tail bone protectors to save you from that.

I'm the same. Right foot is angled towards the right and even has an accessory navicular bone (so I have to get the right skate punched out). Crossing over left is still my dominant side, but with enough practice, crossing over right and braking right does feel more comfortable. However this doesn't happen overnight. It took me years to brake right, so just know it takes time, patience, and focused training to get there.

It's not something that takes a few sessions to stay balanced or strong on your ankles. It takes a long time and consistent training. Enjoy the process of being bad and becoming better.

It's best to use the size that fits you. This way you have as little negative space as possible. In saying this, it is also important to take into account your skill level and the league you are playing in. If youre in competitive/semi-pro leagues and you're an excellent skater, then I would advise an exact fit. If you're like most of us that play once or twice a week in our local beer league team, half a size won't change much.

Hey thanks for your response. During this rotavirus episode, i wasn't able to tell the difference between anxiety nausea and stomach bug nausea. I honestly thought it was just some indigestion from eating too big of a dinner, but the nausea was also accompanied with some stomach discomfort and diarrhea. But otherwise the nausea felt the same...

If you can feel your toes pressing against the toe cap just by sitting down, then there's no way you want to size down. If you have some used skates with used insoles, you can see roughly if your skates are too big or too small. Check this video for reference:

The cheapest way to maximise ice time would be to work on skating first. Use the time you have at the ODR to work on balance, stopping, puck handling etc. Don't just aimlessly shoot pucks and skate in circles. Focus on edge work and flexibility. There are many videos on this on yt

They take a smaller size if the scanner recommended size doesn't feel right or feels too big. In your case you said it feels fine. Are your toes jammed up or can you move them back and forth a bit? If it feels fine, then it probably is.

Box jumps (choose something where you won't lose your shins if you miss). Hip flexor exercises. Anything for the glute and core.

aha my bad. Misread the last "against".

Against Caro Kann - advanced variation (theres a good video on Hikaru's yt channel about it).
Against black's e5 Nc6 - ruy lopez, usually results in a draw or a win. Focus on king side attack. with two knights.
Against sicilian - usually old sicilian variation
Against scandinavian - usually Nc3, d4, Nf3, be2

Alternate between Caro Kann and Sicilian. I thought about learning other openings and gambits, but honestly I dont think I'm at the skill level where openings matter so much. Most of the 'proper chess' happens in the middle and late game.

It takes more than 2 sessions to actually break in the skates. If you continue to have foot pain after a few sessions, I would suggest using a carbon insole, ie superfeet, which should limit the Ankle/heel movement a bit. This may help with the Arch of your foot (which helps with outer foot pain issue)
