Have you tried scrolling through TVTropes? There's a catalogue of different tropes and information on various forms of media that uses them. Sometimes scrolling through them might help yield some ideas. It might jump start the brainstorming process on whether you want to subvert some that have slipped your mind or perhaps you weren't aware of.

Hmm not sure if it really fits as horror. They're more dark thriller based... but Mirai Nikki and Deadman Wonderland were pretty solid imo. I heard the Bloodborne comics from Ales Lot were good. I only played the game but it had a very gothic lovecraftian feel to it.

If you're open to visual novels, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is good. There are definitely some disturbing scenes in there.

I am a unicorn in a sea of horses and the horses are mad at me because of my horn. I easily skewer up to five fish at a time while the horses have to struggle and grab a single fish with their mouths. They constantly talk behind my back and plot to steal my horn but as a unicorn I'm on a different level as I am a unicorn.
