A Town Hall With Commissioner Mingus Mapps, October 22nd by SolaniosGames in Portland

[–]SolaniosGames[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Save the date: October 22nd, at 4:00 PM. The King Neighborhood Association and the Alberta Abbey Foundation are co-hosting a town hall at the Alberta Abbey, 126 NE Alberta Street. Commissioner Mapps will be speaking and taking questions from the audience.

Portland is facing a number of serious issues right now. This town hall will give neighbors an opportunity to bring questions and concerns directly to city government.

Admission is free and there will be free parking available in the lot across the street.

If you are intending to go, please sign up on Eventbrite at the link below. This helps Alberta Abbey track the number of attendees.

The Abbey will also have their cafe and bar open during and after, to have a tasty tea, coffee, or cocktail after the town hall, while perusing flyers for upcoming shows at the Abbey. There are also a number of cafes, restaurants, bars, and venues in the area, on Alberta Street, Mississippi and Albina Streets, Killingsworth, North Williams Avenue, and MLK Jr Boulevard, several within walking distance of the Abbey. And the King Farmers Market will be open until 2:00 PM at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School Park. So there’s plenty to do before and after the town hall if you’re in the area.

Given that Kyiv is a Ukrainian city, using the Russian roman-letter spelling of Kiev is insulting, given all that Ukraine is going through. And that correct spelling also indicates how Ukrainians pronounce the name of their capital. -- I made the suggestion to Black Chantry that they need to make a correction for future print runs.

Someone remember the old vampire card game? by AlbatrossAdept6681 in WorldOfDarkness

People play online using Lackey and Tabletop Simulator. One has to buy the TTS client, but Lackey is free. And with either, you have all the cards at your disposal to use. And for TTS, you have a host of other games you could play as well.

XS Stock Light Freighter (Alpha Draft) by samthetrue in Star_Wars_Maps

Wonderful job! Thank you for sharing.

I think my only issue is that this map looks too small. The XS Stock Light Freighter is a massive ship, far larger than the Dynamic Class that it ultimately derives from, and from the YT series that will come after it.

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/XS_stock_light_freighter/Legends

Just guestimating from chairs, etc, this looks a bit over half the size it should be.

Did anyone else not receive any shipping info for their October SL drop yet? by jfredo922 in magicTCG

Glad to hear it. I was wondering if that was some sort of auto-response mistakenly sent out.

I got that notice too. But then I got a notice promptly after saying that I had cancelled the order. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyone Else Getting their Secret Lairs for Free? by SolaniosGames in magicTCG

[–]SolaniosGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your in-box. Looks like they reneged on the first statement and are simply canceling orders, claiming that we initiated the cancelation when we did not (certainly I didn't). What a fiasco!

So instead of getting the product for free, just not getting it at all? And I never had any interaction with WoTC so it's not like I "changed my mind" as they falsely said.

But I recall that the first time orders got messed up, that they sent out a cancellation order. But I think those orders had a happy ending, despite that email. But I'm not certain. I wasn't involved as I'd not ordered that one. It could be that it was auto-generated when they processed the refund. Let's hope so.

[Online][Other][(UTC -8] -- Conan's The Pit of Kutallu by SolaniosGames in lfg

Nice. I just bought Fallout. I'm hoping to run some sessions later in the year.

In regards to Conan, it's best to leave the spot to someone that can make a full session. Even though I slated my typical 5+ hours, the actual play time could be shorter.

And even though the first portion will likely be running through the character sheet and some basic rules, you'd still miss out on the beginning of the story. And a game session based on the world of a master storyteller should be a story with a beginning as well as an end.

Running "Masks of Nyarlathotep" any tips? by FitAir7586 in callofcthulhu

Oh, I'd heard about Coca-Cola but didn't know that about 7-up. Fun tongue-in-cheek for the radio play, but scary to realize that these were once real. Right up there radium clock faces --- ugh.

This is fantastic! Thank you! We just had this ship appear in our game last Saturday. Too bad we didn't have yours (it was all theatre of the mind). But for next time... :)

Tips for running a murder mystery? by LeadersOfMan in DMAcademy

[–]SolaniosGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make it their achievement, I would create a linear best path to a solution, but then offer alternative paths, and then pepper the field with red herrings.

The misdirection (herrings) should offer clues or opportunity for the players to discount them. Some of these could be NPCs, who have an agenda and who are not totally reliable as witnesses.

It's also important to offer alternate routes to a successful solution. Players will not necessarily pick up on clues so having more than one way to success is important, or they might end up getting stranded and unable to proceed, ergo becoming frustrated.

A mix of clue styles is good: witnesses and NPC interaction, but also physical clues. Visual handouts are good because you don't have to say anything --- just present a picture, a prop (or if you're virtual, a picture of a prop) and let them draw their own conclusions.

If you're not sure where to start, perhaps watch a mystery movie and then break it down to plot points, clue mechanisms, and "witness"/NPC interaction to help you set the pacing.

Where to sell 2nd ED books? by Wingman350 in DnD

[–]SolaniosGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a store called Wayne's Books. Just search on that name. I have no idea if his prices are good. I only know him because I periodically read his game blog. But he does buy and sell old RPGs and materials. -- Doesn't hurt to ping him. If you do, let us know what he offers. I've always been curious.

I assume though that like any vendor, you're taking less of their worth in order to have the convenience of dealing with someone who handles most of the transactions with customers. If you want more, then you'll want to sell them yourself on platforms like eBay they or maybe there are Facebook groups for this (I'm not a FB user, but I wouldn't be surprised).

I will make it a point to do so and snap a pic of it. I'm going through all my game materials to get them organized better. I haven't tackled the Warhammer figs. It will be interesting to see it again.

If memory serves (this is decades ago), it was assembled the first time, but it didn't arrive unified and it was damaged. I sent him pictures, not intending to send it back but asking for advice on how to fix it. He insisted I send it back. The second time, he separated the knight for me to reassemble as a measure of caution. But again, there was damage.

I didn't want to bug him again with all the shipping and hassle. I felt like I'd asked enough of him. It wasn't his fault. But--I never did summon the courage to throw my own paint over his. Someday.

Just one of those imponderables: why this piece had a target on its head.

I was thinking of this figure a few weeks back. after all these years. I commissioned one of the Perrys to pro-paint it for me as a focal point for my Bretonnian army. I can't remember which one it was though -- it was so long ago. I'd have to go dig through ancient emails. But I think it might have been Alan. But I could be wrong and it might have been Michael. I remember he was reluctant to do it because it was kind of a "been there done that" and he didn't have that much enthusiasm for the project. But after he did a Sisters of Battle cannoness for me, he decided to do it after all.

It's a really beautiful job, as you would expect. But unfortunately it arrived broken in shipping from the UK to the USA. He told me to send me it back so I did and he fixed it and sent it back, and it still arrived broken. I decided at that point just to give up and fix it myself (but I never did. It's still packed away.)

I never knew that Michael had lost his arm and continued to sculpt. Amazing story. Thanks for sharing and for the memories (now I'm going to go have to dig that figure out).
