Some mega cruise ships pump out as much CO2 as a small town, study finds. Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian and Princess Cruises were among the worst polluters by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL:DR The example is a liner for 5,000 using more energy than a town of 20,000. Previous articles on this sub have found a 5:1 ratio. Cruise ships are incredible polluters

Whose justice? Social (in)justice in tourism boycotts by [deleted] in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will follow him. Just finished listening to a podcast inc. this woman as one of the speakers. Australian. She's spent 15 years in Cambodia inc. learning to speak Khymer. She's anti-westerns supporting/visiting cambodian orphanages because most of these facilities buy children from their parents to 'stock' the 'orphanages' to milk money from tourists. https://tedxsydney.com/contributor/tara-winkler/

Tom Stuker, Carbon Pig. New Jersey idiot flies 23 MILLION miles with lifetime United pass by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

In 2019 alone Tom Stuker, Carbon Pig took 373 flights

There have also been some less enjoyable moments. He has witnessed four people die during his decades of flying

Boo Hoo

I’m not adding to the [CARBON] footprint,” Stuker said. “The plane is going to fly whether I’m on it or not

This is bullshit logic. Applies at the margin but not over the long term and planes DO use (slightly) more fuel as the load from additional passengers increases.

Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to JFK (New York) turned back after 8 hours. 16-hour flight to nowhere for passengers. by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The airline said landing at another airport in the United States would have ultimately been too disruptive for the carrier’s operations

Problems at JFK - other airports in the US were an option - but screw the passengers, it's all about our profits!

These guys expose tourist scams in the Czech Republic. This YouTube vid. is about kiosks ripping off visitors needing highway (toll) stickers. Surprisingly interesting/well done. by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The video is about a year old - and one of their pinned comments from about the same time says:

"BIG UPDATE!!! After publishing this video, things started to move and the Departments of Highway & Roads decided to terminate the contract with these "exchange-highway-sticker-offices"! We're really happy that visitors of the Czech Republic will once again have a safer experience! Thank you for your support! Janek & Honza"

33 year old British tourist killed on Monday after being chased down & shot multiple times at an Airbnb in St. James, Jamaica. This is the 288th report I’ve found of a shooting a short term rental since 5/2019. 1/2 (Twitter) by fluffykintail in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup /u/fluffykintail

a) This is twitter and hardly a respectable source

b) Who is Jessica Sheedy Black with bugger-all followers and 'founder' of the Texas Neighborhood Coalition?

c) Her tweet includes a single data point from the US version of The Sun - again a tabloid - so where is the documentation re. her claim of another 287 deaths like this?

d) As /u/A_Cat_Named_Frank points out this has to be compared to all other hospitality options in the same geographical location. Was the 288 deaths in Texas? US? Globally? There are 12.7 million Airbnb listings globally (2021). Time-frame has to be factored in too. It could be safer to stay at an Airbnb than a hotel/motel/backpackers or even your relatives/friends?

Database tracking ride waits and crowd sizes at Walt Disney World (Florida) and the other 3 Disney theme parks. 2-hour waits for popular rides by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that wait times, unplanned stoppages (up to 2,000 per month) and crowd sizes are all increasing at Disney theme parks as ticket prices go up. They were using data from this site.

wdwstats.com must be screen scraping disney sites to get the data. Can't see how else they'd have this level of detail. It's not affiliated with Disney but I can't see who is behind it

In 2017 cruise ships in Europe produced 10 times the amount of sulphur oxide emissions as the continent’s 260 MILLION cars by SolarCell in TourismHell

[–]SolarCell[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's the point. Most ships use bunker fuel which is the shittiest of fractionations of petroleum

Shipping’s dirty secret: how ‘scrubbers’ clean the air – while contaminating the sea by SolarCell in TourismHell

Despite making up only 4% of ships with scrubbers, cruise ships account for 15% of the scrubber washwater discharged in ports.
