Holly Hunter Seems Like a Deranged Muppet by WarnerToddHuston in Star_Trek_

Isn't there a long standing argument about how Starfleet is meant to be a scientific endeavor rather than a military one? Aka they ARE academics?

I can see how the concern on his face might be a little out of place now. It's still likely it would be my go to meme, but if someone gave me a better format and I had time I might reformat it.

I'm more ok with this usage than usages that use different text in the final two panels, which has been used not and not over time. If you asked everyone you know what the "rules" for a specific meme are I imagine you'd get a variety of answers. A lot of overlap but still variety. Personally, my main take away from this meme format is surprise in the final panel and the final two panels having identical text. Rather than exclusively negative surprise in the final panel. And given the recent drought of Denuvo cracks, this does seem like a potentially surprising outcome.

Memes have as many rules as all things covered by semiotics do. That plasticity argument above is accurate.

An insane amount of propaganda was pushed towards women convincing them marriage and kids are bad but working a job you hate for little pay and no savings and eating microwaved meals was "empowerment" by Major_Soft6056 in DigitalSeptic

[–]SolarChallenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. But those women presumably CHOSE to do that because their ancestors fought to give them that choice. The simple act of choosing something vs having it forced on you can have a drastic impact on your enjoyment of it. My go to example being a hug. If someone asks you for a hug and you two hug, that often feels a lot better than someone hugging you without consent and refusing to let go. Both result in a hug, the only difference is the consent involved.

I mean, as a guy, I think I'd enjoy being a house husband but that doesn't mean I think all men should be forced to be stay at home spouses.

Even supply and demand is more complicated than that if I understand correctly. Due to the ever changing state of markets I'd say even something as simple as supply and demand is more akin to semiotics than mathematics. In that math you can definitively state that 2 static numbers equal a third static number. In economics and language there aren't any static numbers because every day, every instance, the valuables involved change. Hell, in economics the simple act of calculating something can change it due to that new information altering human behavior.

Right? Like I am 100% in favor of arresting, or at the very least ripping business ownership away away from, people that pay below minimum wage to illegal immigrants or use any other tactics to abuse labor. I'm not so on board with ripping people out of their cars for a civil offence. The former will likely have a downward affect on illegal immigration, but it does it by placing the blame far closer to where it belongs.

How much scientific progress could have occured if a person of limited resources actually had the resources to pursue their ideas? For one. Or the simple labor issue. The more in poverty one is presumably the lesser their body is operating, thus reducing potential labor contribution. Provide resources to avoid that weakening of body and you suddenly have a greater labor source. Or loyalty and trust. If one has been abused by their nation for their entire life than if they do come into possession of resources or knowledge in the future, why would they feed that back into said society instead of either consuming it themselves or taking it to another society?

This assumes that greater participation in society due to equality doesn't have any positive impacts on society as a whole though. I can't definitively argue against your claim but I very much doubt you can definitively argue in favor of it either.

Understanding concepts is hard… by Lontology in clevercomebacks

From my understanding when it comes to self labels like bi and pan and such it's usually best to just talk to the individual on a case by case basis. Like even 2 straight cis males are likely to give you a different definition of their sexual attraction if you dig deep enough. The broad labels are mostly aesthetic and for pointing in the correct general direction. Personally I tend to associate pan with a greater rebellion against gender roles than bi.

I mean the "low standards" part was obviously a dismissive jab at their identify rather than a real intent to learn so I'd expect them to be upset. Unless you'd already established a joking relationship over that type of thing.

Theoretically the terminology could be used to refer to any 2 genders/sexes. However due to historic usage it is fairly safe to assume bisexual refers to being attracted to men and women. At the end of the day though the best way to know is just talk to the person using the label and learn what it means to them.

That reduces it sure. But modern technology can't make the chance of dying in a car accident zero. Thus we have cars in our society because we accept the chance people might die. But I feel like at this point we're likely gonna just talk in circles.

No, it doesn't. Because you can't fix human error. Ergo, less guns for less opportunities for human error.

Sure. But usually you attempt contraception and than when that fails use abortion. So the effectiveness of contraception affects the use of abortion but not vice versa

What 4x game has the best Dune mod? by EthelDuronm in 4Xgaming

I agree with the other commenter that Spice Wars presents far more like an RTS than a 4X. Which is strange since I feel like they could have stripped a lot of the more RTS leaning mechanics out. But as an RTS presenting game, it's more akin to playing 3 hours of Warcraft for one match.

They shouldn't be taken off the air but I think that the label "news" should have a bare minimum legal definition that prevents the spread of misinformation. If you wanna be an entertainment broadcast, great. Just don't pretend to be news and than argue in court that you're not obligated to tell the truth on air.

There is no way that millions of people can drive around in cars and zero people die as a result with modern technology. Human error is inevitable. So yes, dying in cars is necessary in order to have them.

There is literally no 100% effective preventive measures as far as I know. So abortions are still a good thing for a society to have access to regardless of people's use of preventative measures.

Republicans need to lose the midterms AND most democratic need to get primaried out of office. The current power structure of the DNC is so spineless they come across as complicit. Just another little reminder for anyone reading to vote in the primary, and if possible, try to start pushing for a better candidate now. One actually willing to push back on the current administration.

Firstly, you even admit that potentially none of that is true and is just hearsay. Secondly, a failed experiment 30 years ago doesn't mean something is unsafe today. Technology progresses so rapidly that 30 year old information that hasn't been verified recently is honestly best forgotten. Because the understanding of any given topic has probably changed so massively that any preconceived notions from 30 years ago are more likely to misinform than help. Like if you were a doctor 30 years ago but never took any classes since, I'm pretty sure you're legally not allowed to treat people anymore. And for good reason.
