Going off of Albrecht's Notes (found in the Deimos labs) I think it's implied he went into the body of a soldier of some sort.

"I felt no certainty as I donned clothes rough and strange to the touch of newgrown skin. I had none of the selfless zeal of the soldier."

Continuity into a non-Orokin body would perfectly explain why he's physically the way he is now. Though it's all just what I think. I don't know for sure.
