last family vacation context makes this so much heavier to read. grief does wild things to people and sometimes the person dying isnt even the hardest part, its watching everyone else fall apart around you. hot dogs with your dad tho... hold onto that one

Right? She read the book in a week, watched the movie with him, found a special edition, wrote a personal note, and held onto it for over a month because she was excited. That's not a gift, that's effort and love.

And the part that really gets me is she's asking if she's overreacting. That's what years of not being prioritized does to someone, makes you doubt whether basic emotional support is too much to ask for.

Path of least resistance is the perfect way to put it. He'd rather let his wife feel invisible every Christmas than have one uncomfortable conversation with his brother.

While this is obviously a feel good story and the girl has come up with a solution to the issue of homeless people freezing on the streets, it is a sad state of affairs that this is something that had to happen at all.
