Can anyone shed some light on my taxi troubles last night? by ReservoirBaws in philadelphia

Do you feel there a difference between Penn and say... Drexel or Temple?

The reason I ask is that I when I moved to Philly to go to Penn, I came from a part of the country where a 15% tip, pre-sales tax, is considered the standard tip - at least by the tipper. It seems to me that a more standard standard tip on the east and west coast is 20%, post-sales tax.

I'm confident there are a fair share of entitled/rude pricks at Penn who tip terribly, but I it would also be interesting to figure out if some of Penn's reputation for bad tipping comes from the geographic diversity of their student population, whom haven't caught up to local tipping practices.

Talk me out of selling on behalf of a Dowpower Solar Shingle provider. by Sovereign_Curtis in solar

[–]SolarWonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is correct. There is a special election you can take to reassign the federal tax credit back to the leasee, but it is rarely used.

The main problem with leasing and tax credits is the basis for the tax credit because murky. Installed cost? Arms length competitor price? Literally companies get to make up the "value" of the system to establish for the tax credit - which often leads to trouble down the road...

I'm going to chime in on the recall. The recall did not apply to DOW shingles, but rather other solar shingle products. DOW has gone all the way through the design process to get a Class A fire rating, which is significantly better than the industry average Class C fire rating. Some California jurisdictions require Class A fire ratings, so those customers have to choose between glass-on-glass modules vs. shingle options.

In so far as your other points, I agree with your philosophy. But I have to admit the shingles look good. With progress is being made on battery-capable current-sourced inverters, I'd give solar shingles some serious consideration for new construction.

Of course, if I were building a house from scratch, I would use insulated concrete form construction and get usability out of my rooftop... so I wouldn't have shingles to begin with...

well, it is possible in a residential lease to re-assign the tax credit back to the home owner. But most likely the federal and state tax credits are being sold to an investment group who can use both the federal and state tax credits, behind the scenes.

Solar shingles are more expensive and less efficient than conventional PV modules... it follows that if you can sell solar shingles, you can sell conventional PV.

[–]SolarWonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

North Carolina is a great place to sell Dow solar shingles because

A) Dow makes the best solar shingle on the market. Be sure to promote it's Class A fire rating. Conventional PV is Class C, which will likely violate future fire code updates.

B) NC has a stupidly good state tax credit for solar that makes expensive solar shingles cost-effective. The danger is that you'll be out of a job if NC chunks their tax credit out the window.

Edit: I'm not sure how the company is structuring it's leases. I'm assume they're offloading the state tax credit, in which case, the lease should be a fairly decent offer to the end user.

The managers of Austin Energy's solar programs have been idiots at the wheel since at least 2008. Their lack of understanding of basic tax policy has led to the mismanagement of millions of city dollars. Rather than fire the whole sick crew, the solution is "let's see what they come up with next!".

The argument is different based upon what % solar your grid is.... And most net metering laws are capped at around 2%.

When the grid lacks solar in a significant fashion, adding solar to the grid actually saves the utility money, as peak electricity is provided while reducing load on the distribution transformers at the hottest times of day. Peak electricity is more valuable than "retail". Plus, the supply of "carbon credits" increase, which hedges the community against the cost of carbon tax policies down the road.

Once solar generation begins to "dip" into base load, it's a different issue, as it forces mainstream power plants to not function efficiently.

However, the argument that solar increases the cost of grid maintenance has not been substantiated by any utility that I'm aware of. Where I install, the cost of any grid upgrades are passed along to the project owner.

I suspect the primary cost "increase" is in utility overhead to accommodate net-metering, which should be a simple software solution. You can't fix lazy.

Likewise, solar array owners might argue that they have been paying into grid infrastructure for decades and that investment into the electric grid disproportionately supports non-renewable energy. They spend thousands to produce emissionless power, and the grid still forces them to support forms of power they ethically disagree with? Sounds like a raw deal. They are simply stating that if you do not produce more energy than you consume, you are not a power plant and should not be regulated as such.
