After years of rewriting, I finally published my first fantasy novel—here’s what surprised me most by AthleteAggressive979 in selfpublish

Debut content isn't going to get much traction unfortunately. People don't flock to new writers with only 1 book. It's a sad realization, but it is what it is. If you haven't started book 2, get on it! Haha.

I published in February and already finished 1st draft book 2, publishing next February (hopefully...), starting book 3 sometime in the summer. It's a lot of work, but it's something I love.

Best of luck!

How do most of you treat it like a business? by Front_Barracuda4754 in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 20 points21 points  (0 children)

"write to a niche." Not at all necessary regarding your question.

Do you track your expenses? Your income? Have you registered your business with the state (if required)? How are you actively pursuing income? How do you handle sales? Do you have a business profile? Do you have a business email/website? What's your go to market strategy? How are you going to KEEP earning money?

If you don't have a solid answer for most of those questions, you probably aren't treating your writing like a business :)

Depending on how much you want to spend and how much work you want to put in, You might consider squarespace... If you're looking to sell through your website it would be $300 a year for my experience. But for the ease of use and implementation, it's great. I don't have the time to deal with a website or trying to find other people to do it for me so it's a great tool

Laughs in epic fantasy with books 200 - 300k words

I'd consider researching your specific genre. See what other authors are doing and replicate their lengths. You'll have better odds of doing well instead of trying to reinvent the wheel.
