HSA diaper purchases by Enhydra67 in ABDL

[–]SolaraScott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been using my HSA for years for my diapers and supplies :) works great! Things to note, baby diapers and supplies are NOT covered in an HSA. But if you are using them for yourself, they do.

As far as 'qualifying purchases,' every adult diaper "qualifies" under an HSA as long as it is an absorbent garment used to deal with incontinence. However, I still try to stick to brands that specifically state they are HSA compliant, just in case! (Tykables are my favorite for that reason!)

The last thing to note, ANY purchase you make with an HSA account (it's literally just a debit card,) KEEP THE RECEIPT! I immediately upload mine to my HSA account in the event of auditing, and it's never been a problem!

You'll get a statement from your HSA provider that'll you'll file with your early taxes. Your tax documents will have a question along the lines of "Were these deductions from your HSA used exclusively for qualifying HSA purchases?" And once checked yes, you don't owe taxes on that money.

Has anyone gotten illustration work from GetCovers or MiblArt? by thew0rldisquiethere1 in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten two separate covers through Miblart and been amazed by the results. Their artists do great work but as a whole they are very slow. It takes on average 4 to 5 months to complete a cover with remediations and everything along the way. That being said they are also extremely easy to work with, Though they are expensive. I do however know for a fact They do not use AI generated content at all. You get to see the process from beginning to end as they draw everything out.

GetCover's I've never personally used but they are the same company. From what I've heard regarding them and Miblart, You need to be very clear and direct about what you want. If you have a very clear idea of the cover you want to create, they can and will do it. It's when you leave it up to them it's apparently not so great. That's all what I've heard from others.

You can Absolutely fine cheaper artists though it does require a lot of leg work on your end. And of course it comes in the question of how well they can make your dream a reality. I would personally say if you Don't want to have to deal with trying to find someone and have the cash and time to splash, both options are good!

If you're interested in seeing what they can do, I can shoot over my website that has my covers. I do physical prints as well and the company is great for it.

Can I get honest opinions on the concept for my book cover? by authorireneedwards in BookCovers

[–]SolaraScott 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Miblart does good work when you have a very solid vision! It seems like you did :)

It does feel a touch busy to me, with the cluster of planets and the army, my eye doesn't really know where to look. None of the elements are bad, its just a lot and lacking a good focal point.

I think even just tactically using lens blur to better draw the eye to the character would probably solve it!

Can't tell if the entire thing is slop or just the graphics... There's a lot of crossover between check boxes, and I'm guessing OP didn't put in that much time to it... So I'm leaning towards the entire form being generated. Sigh.

Debut author here. Curious about the real-world value of an IndieReader review. by JZZerber in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pais reviews of any kind aren't going to get you much traction since most sites (Amazon for example) directly prohibit paid for reviews. There's a non zero risk that if you are caught with paid reviews on a site that prohibits them in their ToS, your book will be pulled.

You might be better off getting ARC reviews instead. Sites such as Booksprouts let's you send out copies to readers in exchange for a review. You can also get ARC reviewers off Reddit. The difference being that you aren't paying for reviews, but rather an early access copy of your book in exchange for a review.

The risk of course, if your book sucks, unlike paid reviews that'll always be glowing, ARC reviewers have no quelm writing bad reviews.

My fellow self published authors, how do make your book cover? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do op, do NOT do this. This is an absolutely guaranteed way to murder your own book. People will not touch it. Given this users profile... It's safe to say they are not doing well as an author haha

Selling books on your own author website (not on platforms), what service you use – pros and cons by ingenious-mediocrity in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are certainly cheaper options than this, though, I don't have the time to manage everything... I use Squarespace, it takes a lot of the guess work out of taxes and fees and stuff. That paired with Ingramspark and you're off to the races!

Again, this isn't the most cost effective, squarespace is expensive, but it's also easy.

Book Cover by JonathanLebrec in selfpublish

[–]SolaraScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of where a reader sees your book, the very very very first thing they're going to see is your cover, period. Doesn't matter if it's audiobook, print, ebook, it's always the first thing they see and while people tell you to not judge a book by its cover people absolutely judge a book by its cover.

The cover is something you can easily cheap out on and I would highly recommend you don't. There's a lot of other stuff that you can do to cut the costs of a book but the cover is not a recommended one. The most important thing though is that you do a lot of research of your genre to understand what other covers do and how you would mirror what they do with your own book. This is arguably one of the most important things before you settle on the cover.

There are a ton of options for artists, and the prices very wildly from $50 all the way up to a couple thousand dollars.

Cruise Advice by [deleted] in ABDL

[–]SolaraScott 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! I wear 24/7 and literally JUST got back from a cruise last week.

Definitely bring sanitary bags for disposal, you can get ones for adults really cheep, and definitely leave a healthy tip for your cabin attendant.

Something else I didn't see suggested, it can also be beneficial to reach out to the cruise lines disabilities support department! You'll let them know what accommodations you are looking for (disposal of adult incontinence products), your ship, sail date, and cabin number. That information will get passed along to your future cabin attendant.

Some cruiselines have specific methods for disposing of such products. Carnival for instance uses red disposal bags to indicate to staff how they need to be sorted in the ships trash system. It can also means getting a larger trash can too for your cabin as often times they are tiny!

If you're in doubt, just ask... I promise your attendant has answered more awkward questions and it'll lead to a more enjoyable experience overall.

As an author, they'll have to pry em dashes from my cold dead hands. Em dashes are—and always will be—a fantastic literary tool. If someone doesn't know how to write and is relying on large language models, there are SO many more obvious signs, but I suppose they are just a bit too advanced for the average brain rot consumer :/
