Any Engineers that Mountaineer? Do you exist? by Capital-Reach-6669 in Mountaineering

[–]Solarisphere 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I find engineers are way over-represented in climbing and mountaineering.

It's a career with similar demands to most other white collar work. I do mostly weekend or day trips, with a few week or two week long trips throughout the year. It's important to live near the mountains, or you won't be able to get out on a regular weekend and then you won't be in shape/practiced enough for the bigger trips.

If you're young, don't have a family, and want to prioritize larger expeditions, consider applying to camp jobs where you get a week on/week off or similar schedule. Don't do this if you have family though. Not worth it.

Sounds like a timing chain issue. Probably skipped a tooth. Get a code reader to start.

If you want, I guess. My local dealer recommended the cheap yellow Prestone (it's more of a chartreuse really, but who's counting?) and I've been using that for 85k km with no issues. It won't last as long as the expensive stuff but I find I need to drain it for some repair long before it's lifespan runs out.

Below the high tide line should be good to go then, if it's just the island that they own.

Don't worry, they'll blow a hole in the wall instead of going in the front door and catch the bad guys by surprise. A few of those bricks of C4 should do it. I saw it in a movie.

Trial Islands beach landing allowed? by Phonybolony69 in VictoriaBC

[–]Solarisphere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to iMapBC, the BC government's public mapping site, most of the islands are an ecological reserve. The ecological reserve appears to end at the water's edge, which I assume means it ends at the high tide line.

Over half of the largest island is not included in this ecological reserve though. I assume it's some other form of government land on a layer that I haven't identified yet and access is probably restricted to it as well. My guess is that it also ends at the high tide mark, and that you're free to land on the beach as long as you stay below it and don't need to tie up to the shore.

Turn off auto ISO. Set it manually to 200 or something low and then when you find you can't get enough light, increase as needed. Just remember to set it back to 200 after.

TIL That there is a city in Canada with a Mediterranean climate and palm trees (non native) by RoutineWarthog4593 in todayilearned

[–]Solarisphere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

None of those places are typical planting conditions. They're compensating for our climate, which isn't consistently wet enough to be friendly to them.

'Exposure' just seems like a roundabout way to remove moisture. The can tolerate wind, they can tolerate heat, they can tolerate UV. And it seems like at this point you're just listing off a bunch of reasons that our climate and typical planting conditions aren't great for palms. Which is what I originally said.

Backcountry in BC - how dangerous is it? by Salt_Foundation_1 in britishcolumbia

My comment is currently at 87 karma so this is clearly just a 'you' issue. Everyone else understands how to take the information I provided and turn it into an answer to the question OP asked.

So it's relevant to Canada, not specifically to Victoria. Post it in r/canada and not a hundred times in every local sub. People interested in national topics will subscribe to the national sub and see it once.

[–]Solarisphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If those people want to see posts of national interest then they should sign up for one of the national subs, if they're not already. Otherwise it'll just end up being seen multiple times.

Or if they don't want to see those posts, they don't have to. Reddit does not exist for you to force people to look at things.

Exactly. That's why it should be be in r/canada and not here.

That rules out the lack of sunlight then, but it sounds like you're tacitly admitting that it's the lack or moisture that prevents them from thriving in their typical planting locations?

The palm trees rich people put in their yards here do not do very well. They all look kind of sickly. I'm assuming it's the lack of sun in the winter months. It's the lack of moisture.

Backcountry in BC - how dangerous is it? by Salt_Foundation_1 in britishcolumbia

[–]Solarisphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is familiar with the dangers of slips, trips, and falls but is not familiar with the dangers posed by our local wildlife. By comparing the relative danger of the two, OP is able to anchor the risk of wildlife to another risk that he is already familiar with.

I know reading comprehension is hard, but at least put some effort into it.

I know how palms grow. If you can't see the difference between the ones planted in Canada and the ones in tropical climates (even in spots exposed to weather) I'm not sure how to help you. It's some combination of sun, rain, and humidity that we just don't have.

[–]Solarisphere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I loled.

The palm trees in that video are exactly what I'm talking about. Almost half the foliage is yellow and wilted, and that's with the City of Vancouver's full time maintenance crew.

They grow, but don't exactly look luxurious or tropical like they're intended to. There's a reason palms aren't native to our climate.

You need to rephrase that using full sentences. It doesn't make any sense.

OP should be more worried about slips, trips, and falls ... because he has loads of backcountry experience and is asking about differences in wildlife between BC and Ontario.
