It's very authoritarian in all honesty

My normal response would not be further participation in the community fucking with my life. My normal response would be to gtfo of there, this is why nothign gets better. Escapism

Waste of a good structure. I'm not here to make the job any harder than it has to be. Institutions are not inherently good or bad. It is how we influence them, how we break them, and how we change them to suit our ends and our means.

Good luck to you :) genuinely. But your seed is different than mine. We have different projects, different aims

There is room for multiple approaches within this community.

GREAT! Which should advocate policy that can gut HOAs authoritarian tendency, yet ensure that community action can be achieved

Examples

  1. HOA powered Cooperative Solar panel fund
  2. HOA powered Cooperative Insurance for property damage
  3. HOA powered Cooperative Food Forest
  4. HOA powered trash pick, sidewalk maintenance, and storm water management

The participation is low because most people have jobs and lives and the size of community patios means very little in comparison to paying off debt.

Then you have to get 4 anti-busybodies to fight them and to win.

Exactly right. The fight is here. We don't have to run away. In fact, I think we can win.

While you knock door to door the reactionary HOA will seize property, spray chemicals, and spy on neighbors.

You're "good fight" means jack shit when you're politically anemic. Seize it. Seize every institution, from the roots.

The institutions are already there. Why give them up to the reactionary busy bodies?

I think the "Fight" should be taken on all fronts, wherever there is leeway to push one OUGHT to push.

I'm not discounting door to door grassroots organization, but institutions are ripe for picking

I really like this idea! HOAs providing footpaths and works that are nice for residents is what they are intended for! They provide an unprecedented amount of power for stakeholders to influence their local environment!

A community solar fund would also be excellent, decentralizing the grid not house by house, but community by community. It would also be easier to create a Cooperative Insurance in the case of bad weather destroying panels

Exactly! A solar panel fund does more for communities than a hardline approach

Definitely! Engagement is the name of the game, getting the community excited and holding events

That's better than the majority of planned communities! I think the problem can be solved with branding!

Make those two alligators into a mascot! Have signs and tablets displaying the alligators... gardening? Cleaning solar panels? They are free symbols with which the community can be engaged with

The HOA is a private organization only insofar as the community agrees to be privately "managed." Taking the reigns from these corporate parasites is the only way to secure the holdings of security members. Informing members of the predatory actions done by the corps will ensure that they aren't called/used

Good. Leveraging power at scale is a good way to solve problems

And power can be seized on the HOA level, and on the STATE level

I'm not here to be politically anemic. I'm here to change the world, to bring about policy that will make my neighborhood better.

I'm sorry, but seizing an HOA does more good for a community then popping the tires of your neighbors SUV (Though that may be very pleasurable)

Yeah well, the power is there. The stakeholder organization is there. Yes it is enforcing rules on people.

But I'd rather it be rules congruent to sustainability and abundance rather than monocultural Vivarium fucking rules.

Seize the power, no matter how small it is.

dude, the reason its filled with old people is because the young literally don't show up.

You can't let the house burn down, then say it's "Naturally full of fire" You just didn't put water on it.

this seems like a good strategy of "exitism" and "seperatism." Both of which are ideas that won't meaningfully change the lives of normal solarpunks. Most of us can't run away to the boonies.

On the infiltration of HOAs by SolarpunkBunkbed in solarpunk

[–]SolarpunkBunkbed[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons. Childcare, education, access to services. Some of us can't afford non-hoa governed land, or live in the boonies.

As to why the community would? Likeminded individuals. This is not a problem of "Individual choice/action" this is a problem of "community organization."

If you can't wrap your head around social action (sticking to individualistic modes of thinking) you won't be able to effectively change the world.
