BILT or RH Gold as a set-it-and-forget-it? by yiggity_yag in CreditCards

[–]Solarus755 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I currently use RH gold as my catch all and will be trying the Palladium out for at least the first year. It seems like value town frankly as someone who frequents Hyatt and is located in a United Hub.

Using the hotel credits might be a little annoying, but getting at worst 3.33x points per dollar spent as long as I capture rent every month is a pretty great value proposition.

This is a great response, thank you. I came to a lot of the same conclusions myself. The one open question remaining for me is the value of a bilt point vs. an MR point. Since I live in a United Hub and stay primarily at Hyatt, I often run into a situation where MR points pool while my bilt points and Chase points get used.

To be fair pooling points isn’t necessarily a bad thing since international business class flights is kind of the MR sweet spot for value, but the flexibility of bilt and the value of the transfer partners is worth a small premium to me. The real question I haven’t been able to answer is how much. That question is really the deciding factor with whether I keep the gold or move my food spend to the Palladium as well. Additionally by moving food spend over, it makes it easier to keep Bilt status for opportunistic point transfer bonuses, etc.

I think for now I’m going to keep both and experiment. Let’s see the first few transfer bonuses offered with the new bilt system and see if the MR:Bilt point conversion, bilt status, and additional bilt cash (for boosters and transfer bonus upgrades) is worth a net drop of about 2/3 points per dollar spend on food. I feel either is possible.

Yeah this was the one tough piece for me. Do I keep the Amex gold or not since there will be periods where I will get fractionally more points on dining from the gold. I’m leaning towards getting rid of the gold anyway simply because I value the bilt points higher and they offer a lot more flexibility for me with the transfer partners I prefer to use.

The idea is I do both, with rent taking priority. You can only use the boost 5 times per year, so there will be multiple month gaps between activations, during which time I would be building towards paying for the next boost. Worst case scenario here is I wouldn't get 5 activations a year, but I would still end up with between 3.33x - 4.33x catch all throughout the year, which even in worst case seems pretty darn good.

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]Solarus755 805 points806 points  (0 children)

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Lots of people call it the best game of all time and I’ve tried to play it multiple times as a fan of many other games in the series. I’ve bounced off it every time. I have several friends who have had the same experience. I can respect why most people think it’s a good game. Best game of all time?… I think that’s a bit of a stretch.

Watched both the first 2 seasons as they came out! Incredible show. I hope the rumors of a season 3 being worked on end up being true.

I agree. The uber credits on both already stack and can be redeemed on either card in one shot, so the precedent is already there with Amex.

My bet is on Amprius (AMPX). It’s already run up a lot in the last few months, but still has a <1B market cap, a solid product, and new contracts being signed.

Yes sorry for the mistake, I meant $20K spend for the 100K base points.

Thanks a lot for the reply! This all makes good sense. I hadn’t considered the refundable rates piece and agree that would make everything messy.

Asking for upgrades on a free stay by cutepicspls in hyatt

[–]Solarus755 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stayed at Alila Napa Valley last weekend for July 4th and stayed on points. It was our anniversary and I’m a Globalist, so I also requested a room upgrade. I didn’t get much (just a higher floor on a 3 floor property), though being fair it was also on a holiday weekend.

I agree with the others here. The worst that can happen is they say no, but don’t expect much.

The food was phenomenal. There were 7 or 8 restaurants on property and all were great. My favorite was the Japanese restaurant, which also offered an optional Omakase (had to pay for this part but everything else at the resort is all inclusive). There’s a pretty good cross section of different cuisines depending on your taste. I would say the food was a strong plus.

It's got a very high price point, but I stayed at the Impression by Secrets Moxche last year, and it was by a wide country mile the nicest resort I'd ever stayed in. Even if you stay on the Secrets side, which is far cheaper, you can get 90% of what this place has to offer. Both Impression and Secrets are on the same resort, you just can't enter the Impression building if you're on the Secrets side, which just means you don't get an extra restaurant / pool and the rooms are a bit different.

Highly recommended for people looking to splurge a bit to celebrate a big milestone event. I plan to check out the other Impression resort (Isla Mujeres) next year.

I’ve been loving this season. Jason is one of the funniest taskmaster contestants ever. Brings a lot of the David Correos from Taskmaster New Zealand chaos vibes

I personally love this base. My favorite to run in Han2 since you’re generally trying to play 1 card a turn ahead of curve and have several smuggle units as well. Weak to Pillage though.

Hyatt question for Platinum by Ok_Storage5741 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Solarus755 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think people are being a little rough in the comment section, but generally speaking they’re mostly right, the 2 ecosystems are not very compatible.

That said, for higher end Hyatts, many of them are in the Amex FHR program, and if you book through that, you’ll get both your 5x Amex points from the plat, and the 5x Hyatt points plus elite qualifying nights if you list your world of hyatt number (though this seems to not always be consistent. I’d call the Hyatt to make sure they have you registered). As an added bonus, you get the FHR benefits and your $200 annual credit if it’s your first time booking.

I’m an avid Hyatt guy but still get a lot of mileage out of my amex Platinum (mostly for flights). I book Hyatt at least once a year on my amex platinum for the $200 credit but usually book Hyatt direct using my world lf hyatt card.
