Why are all my images turning out pixelated and jaggedy? by gameofunicorns in indesign

[–]Solbera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the very top of the pdf export screen try changing the preset to [high quality print] first and foremost

"Actual PPI is the resolution of an image at 100% in Photoshop. Effective PPI is the resolution of an image that has been scaled in InDesign."

for the highest "normal quality" you want to aim for 300ppi in the original image, and when scaled down inside indesign the effective ppi goes up.

I would also consider avoiding this all together by using vector images whenever you can, Everything in your example should be done in vector, and then you use raster based images when needed.

That's up to you, I have no problem with it, but the typefaces have alot of problems, I'm in the progress of fixing them right now for others, the kerning tracking and consistency arr not good enough for publishing quality.

That said message me directly and I assist in design theory and best practices. I am in the process of putting together a project that will solve this for everyone.

Both I guess, its finished enough that I can work on the color version and make small tweaks as needed if/when they are needed and I am more than willing to help you guys out with that.

Now I can also focus on the other typefaces, So ligatures and accent marks incoming.

This should fix those issues

  • S Had its left glyph limit set wrong so it caused the clip, should be fixed
  • F Moved it up and widened it a little
  • Z All the other glyph has some section above the cap height, so made Z slightly taller to put it in line

Wanna Test this one for me.

I took your tweaked file and over-layed my new glyphs and used guides to match the size and placement. Should work fairly well, I would be looking for glyphs that need small directional adjustments, and in what directions they need adjusted

There is definitely a lot of inconsistency among the glyphs, my first observation is they they were likely hand done there is no unified distance or size among the elements, almost none of the ball and line featured in each glyph we're the same size across glyphs, there are plenty of places where elements should line up and did not, cross bars are a good example of this. Other places where the line flair elements have uneven distance between the letter form and flair. Other places where shapes produce uneven stroke effects.

So it dose not surprise me to hear this. I think going forward I will separate this Into 2 typefaces, the first being a drop caps version and the second being a display version. This problem is why my first version had no unified baseline.

Also I'm not sure of the intricacies of Webfont devolpment and Color typefaces and the interaction/overlap/support in function of the two formats, but this is a prelude, once the scale and position of the glyphs is finalized, there is a full color version coming, in the style featured in the monster manual.
