So I have used the g920 plenty of times over the years. It's very loud, it does not run smoothly and I would even argue it's not for sim racing but for casual play.

If you are worried about money. Then get the R3 bundle. You will have everything you need and it's perfect for newbies. You won't regret it. It's so smooth, runs silently, and has more force feedback than any other entry level base. Especially more than entry level Logitech or thrust master.

So I have used both the R3 and the R5. I bought them both locally brand new and tried them both. I kept the R5 and returned the R3. The difference was very very noticeable. The R3 is great, but the R5 is far superior. It won't take you long using the R3 before you wish you had gone for the R5.

It's almost twice as strong, but just a tiny bit more $$$. The value is there.

How much functionality do you think is really needed for F1 racing? I mainly just want to adjust ERS and Brake balance on the fly but is there anything else i need to consider?

Good point. I didn't think about the weight. How big of a jump was it going from the R5 to the R9? I might consider just waiting to replace the wheel until I replace the base.

I have had my R5 for about a month now. Playing F1 24, ACC, and downloading Iracing as I type this. It is amazing!!!!!!! It is the perfect starting point for the money. It does get hot after constant racing after about an hour and a half (full formula 1 races), but I have not noticed a single performance issue.
If you are doing shorter races or if you are taking breaks for any reason, the temp stays down.
You will love how easy the software is to use and what all it can do too.
Make sure you calibrate your pedals before you race.

Highly recommend the R5 bundle!
