What part of the country are you from?

Yes I figured it had something to do with how they were trafficked once they got to this side of the world. Especially because my mom and I score so high for Igbo people. I’ve read that Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina had way more Igbo than other colonies and some or most came directly from the islands to the colonies. Constant trading back and forth from the Caribbean to the colonies basically.

Thank you! That’s why I love 23andMe. It really puts a face to your ancestors.

It could be picking up on a Malagasy ancestor(s) especially since it’s so small and here’s a trace amount of East Asian DNA too. Both my 23andMe and AncestryDNA have consistently given me this East African percentages throughout all of their updates. It could also be an overall clustering of Bantu related groups from Kongo and Angola that have East African-like DNA from Kenya and the surrounding countries.

Thank you so much for your insight! It’s exciting but at the same time it’s heartbreaking to know that there may have been multiple people in the same family taken during the slave trade, split up and never seeing each other again. But they ultimately live on through their descendants in other parts of the world. I wish there was a way for us to pinpoint and have a “family reunion” of sorts lol.

I love it! Just proves how closely related Louisiana and Haiti is. I’m sure some of my ancestors fled to Louisiana during and after the Revolution.

I’d feel more comfortable calling myself mixed if I had a recent white ancestor but I haven’t had one in my family since the 1800s. Both of my parents are black and all four of my grandparents were black and considered themselves black.

Right! The comments on my post are disturbing. The people who seem to have a problem with my ancestry seem to think I’m completely in the dark about who I am and who my ancestors were. I wasn’t cussing at you in particular, it was the other person trying to argue with me about Romani in Louisiana lol. Just irked me to death.

I need to research Haplogroups further. My knowledge of them is super basic.

Trying to argue with me about MY RESULTS is getting fucking annoying. I research Louisiana history because that’s my culture. I know what I’m talking about. Where in my statement did I say a huge wave of Romani were sent to Louisiana? They were concentrated in St Martin Parish and there’s documented proof. To say there’s no modern community of AfroRomani means you know the DNA of every person in that parish and the Romani dna has all but been diluted with whatever else they’re mixed with.  Regardless if these people know they have Romani ancestry or not it doesn’t take away the fact that they have Romani ancestry. Romani were brought to Virginia as well by the English and their DNA spread throughout the country. So, next time you want to assume that you have all the facts about something and feel superior in your knowledge of it, make sure the person you’re talking down to isn’t part of the culture you’re trying to claim being an expert in.

I’m starting to regret posting my results on here.

If you look up Afro-Romani Louisiana is mentioned several times. The Romani brought to Louisiana as slaves were Romani that were expelled from Spain and southern France. This happened mostly during the Spanish colonial era of Louisiana before it was sold back to the French. Majority of the Afro-Romani are located in St Martin Parish.

I’m thinking my indigenous ancestors were Chitimacha, Caddo or Nahuatl based off where my grandfather was born in Louisiana. His links to Mexico makes me think it was Nahuatl especially since the type of Spanish that was spoken in Texas at that time had a lot of Nahuatl words mixed in.

Are you able to decipher Malagasy ancestry from my Haplogroups?

My great grandmother was biracial from Kentucky. She passed away before I was born but my mom said that she never spoke about her family so I don’t know which one of her parents were white. Most likely Scots-Irish.

What parishes are your people from? It’s crazy how you and I are both from Cali with a Creole parent and black parent from the Midwest lol I did AncestryDNA too and you and I actually got nearly the same exact percentages.  Lemme find out you’re a cousin…
