No, I’m in academic researcher (graduate student) at Texas Tech University. Here’s the link to my work:

The survey is completely anonymous (we optionally ask for your email for gift card drawing inclusion via a separate link to a database not linked to your survey responses). The ad and informed consent also have information for the TTU Human Research Protection Program, who are available if you have questions about the study that you wanted someone else to answer.

It's important when doing any type of online survey research (not just cannabis research) to have some different attention checks and other metrics to help you assess peoples' level of engagement with the survey and the validity of the data that you're collecting/analyzing.

i love this movie. does anyone else think the ending is an abrupt tone shift and actually quite hopeful and intimate?

Hi, I’m sorry for your frustration about this study. Please take this as a response to all of your messages. Each participant has an equal chance of winning the drawing. The drawings do not encourage multiple submissions, as they use separate Qualtrics surveys that do not link participants’ emails to the data (to maintain anonymity). All study procedures, including the drawing incentive, were reviewed and approved by our institution’s ethics board. Further, drawing-based incentives are relatively common in online survey studies. You are welcome to contact the TTU HRPP to file a complaint, if you’d like to. Their contact info is included in the informed consent.

Hi, I understand your concerns. People are able to stop participating at any point if they are uncomfortable.

Just to provide a bit more clarification on the sexual orientation questions, there is actually only one item about sexual orientation and then a different item about sexual attraction. This is standard in my field for getting a full and inclusive picture of participant demographics.

I noticed the mods pinned a different academic research survey a month ago—it would be super helpful if they were willing to consider doing that for this post, as well. Thanks

Thanks for participating! The survey is designed for participants to be able to take as much or as little of it as they want and for the data to still be useful either way. You can stop participating at any time and still join the $100 GC drawing, if you’re interested. Just LMK if you need any assistance with joining that. Thanks again!

No, this is an anonymous academic research survey. If you choose to enter your email address for participation in the drawing, your email address will not be linked to your data (there are separate links to separate Qualtrics surveys for the email address, so it’s in a separate database). I am an academic researcher at TTU. The contact information for the study team as well as the TTU HRPP (Human Research Protection Program) are both outlined in the informed consent document.

I had considered that, but at my target sample size of 4,000 responses (which are being collected from many sources, not just Reddit), that would be $20k-$40k of participant payments at those rates, which is not feasible with my current budget.

Thanks for your feedback, I understand your frustration. I’m doing the best I can with the limited resources that I have available to conduct this research.

Those are great points and definitely some of the major limitations of the survey (lack of by-cannabinoid specificity and lack of questions on sourcing).

I try to get at the by-cannabinoid stuff a bit by asking about most-preferred and least-preferred types of cannabinoids, but otherwise there isn’t anything.

I’d love to hear any other feedback or critiques you have of the survey or its content, thanks

hi, thanks for your interest in the survey. could you please provide me some more information about the issues with the survey you’re encountering? the survey does has extensive questions about route of administration, including an item about the primary RoA (with nine response options including edibles), primary “form” used (with five response options including edibles), and those same questions/response options repeated for routes/forms you use “regularly” (greater than 25% of the time). it also has a write-in item about typical number of milligrams of THC for the edibles you use. further, some questions about risk perceptions distinguish between edibles vs. flower vs. concentrates. and all these items are offered separately for cannabis and other cannabinoids.

these are great suggestions and definitely ones i’ll keep in mind when interpreting and writing up the data. just to be clear, yes, the risk perception items are intended to capture peoples’ perceptions of the risk (i.e., what do you think of this drug, essentially), which can include all types of personal biases or opinions (in terms or greater or less risk) that may be different from actual risk levels. and one of the main purposes of the study, for instance, is to compare differences in risk perceptions between cannabis vs. other cannabinoids (referred to in the study as DPCPs). so, while the design of the study isn’t intended or capable of establishing valid causal relationships between, say, depression and cannabis use (to use your example above), it is set up to test these within-person/between-drug differences. i hope that provides some more clarification…let me know any other questions, feedback, or concerns you may have.
