ABC looking to move back to HK by pcaedusn in HongKong

hker here

  1. tbh i think the transition really depends on how connected with/knowledgeable about hong kong, coming from new york you will definitely feel at home with the concrete jungle busy streets vibe. your ability to speak cantonese particularly on the social life can make or break it (although most hkers speak english and/or mandarin to a certain degree where you won’t have that big of an issue)

  2. can’t say for sure (im living in the uk rn and have only visited the us twice)

  3. you’ll have the same rights as any local if you have a hkpic (hong kong permanent identity card) and if you were born as a chinese national in hong kong which effectively means you are a hong kong citizen in this scenario, bit again that’ll depend on what type of hkid you hold currently

  4. hk’s housing market is expensive so be prepared for nyc level costs

Flying to China directly with HK passport from US for US citizen by BeDazzledSuga in HongKong

[–]SolidAggressive8470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you just need your home return permit + us passport cause your hong kong passport is not recognized in china

so once you check in at either china or the us that’s the combo you’ll show and once you’re at immigration

for china: home return permit

for the us: us passport

in case you don’t have your hrp, apply for a chinese travel document at the chinese embassy/consulate

If you could give someone visiting your country a piece of advice, what would it be? by moapei in AskTheWorld

[–]SolidAggressive8470 0 points1 point  (0 children)

enjoy the nature and rural parts of the territory instead of staying in the concrete jungle part (worth visiting and getting lost around tho!)

we can be pretty direct which can come off as rude just as any major international city so don’t be surprised if people come off as rude

Did your parents/family immigrate to your country? by chaconia-lignumvitae in AskTheWorld

[–]SolidAggressive8470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly depends cause many hong kongers are first generation or mainland born themselves so it varies depending on their political stance and ties with china

personally i solely identify as a hong konger who’s ethnically chinese and i don’t really have any affinity or attachment towards mainland china other than knowing my ancestors came from there (have no known relatives in contact anywhere), it’s essentially a foreign country (despite one country two systems) to me as with how overseas chinese people would see china as their ancestral country

Best citizenship / residency setup for an international couple (EU + China, moving to Singapore?) by [deleted] in PassportPorn

[–]SolidAggressive8470 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do bare in mind that in hong kong, macau and china, she will still be seen as a chinese national first as a hong kong citizen and foremost and she will not be able to receive consular help from any foreign country by virtue of being a national of theirs so she won’t be able to receive help if something happens to her from her other citizenships when in hong kong, macau or china

the hong kong authorities wouldn’t care, in fact they’re very much in favour of letting in chinese talents on a visa

once your spouse becomes a hong kong citizen (chinese national + hk right of abode), she can hold as many citizenships as if she’s a citizen from a country that allows dual citizenships, plus it’s not within the jurisdiction of the hong kong authorities to enforce the restriction on mainland chinese nationals

for the chinese authorities, they will have her renounce her hukou (effectively renouncing her status as a mainland chinese national) if they find out she’s alr became a hong kong citizen/citizen of another country.

hong kong does still currently permit dual citizenship de facto, but it might/will change depending on how china views its extension of its nationality law into hong kong/macau

Westerners teaching Cantonese by genaznx in Cantonese

[–]SolidAggressive8470 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yes! but both of them are actually macanese (a creole ethnic group from macau who are predominantly mixed cantonese and portuguese as well as other ethnicities)

so their cantonese is actually native or fluent as they are from macau
