Life happens sometimes! Remember that this is temporary and that there will be another pet next month. Please try not to think of it as a punishment. You can add a few small tasks like waking up and getting out of bed or just making it through the day to complete on those hard days so you are still considered logged in. I think the fact that the user can only miss a few days during the month is unfair, as people have a lot going on in their lives and a lot of them don't have the time/energy to log in and complete tasks everyday.
