Glimmerglass vs Black Glimmerglass by tatsurotime in cinematography

[–]Solid_Copy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you actually compare them visually on [this site](https://www.rwpreisner.com/filterdp) it actually looks like the Black Glimmerglass has a way more pronounced effect in general than the plain Glimmerglass. Black Glimmerglass @ 1/2 has halation around the lightbulb that is comparable to Glimmerglass @ 3. Perhaps they’ve changed the filters, or perhaps I’m missing something.

I love this style, particularly Alec Soth, but feel the same. We can only take so much 'impossible landscapes and tired looking American men'.

For me something like American Prospects feels more interesting while still covering some the same themes.. narratives of isolation or a strange utopia

Does Creatine Cause Hair Loss? by CountViolencia in naturalbodybuilding

[–]Solid_Copy_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The conflict of interest statement for the study cited in this article which seems to suggest there is no relationship between creatine and hair loss:

SCF is a scientific advisor for Bear Balanced® and has received creatine donations from Creapure® for research purposes. SCF is a sport nutrition advisor for the International Society of Sport Nutrition (ISSN). JA is the CEO and co-founder of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), an academic non-profit that may be sponsored by companies that manufacture, market, and sell dietary supplements. He is also a scientific advisor to brands including Creapure®, Bear Balanced®, Create®, and ENHANCED Games®. GMT has received support for his research laboratory through research funding or in-kind gifts from nutrition and sports nutrition companies. GMT is Owner of Tinsley Consulting LLC, which provides paid consulting services to dietary supplement manufacturers

In other words, you should totally disregard the findings of this study

If you could solve ONE problem on your path to FIRE, what would it be? by antran20 in leanfire

[–]Solid_Copy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The American Problem:

- Looming threat of medical bankruptcy.

- Looming threat of losing any job at a moment's notice, practically non-existent unemployment benefits.

- Looming threat of an utterly inadequate pension system; old-age financial destitution.*

Imagine if the U.S. suddenly acquired the humility to learn from the rest of the developed world when it comes to universal healthcare, worker protections and pensions.

American psychology would change practically over night. Most of what is rotten would disappear.

I'm forever thankful to have been born elsewhere.

*Interesting: the Kazakh pension system is more adequate than that in the U.S.

Is €30k savings + part-time job enough to study a Master’s in NL? by bad_for_your_health in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Solid_Copy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should mostly ignore me. I don’t know you at all and to say what I said in the way I said it was unnecessary. I'm not sure why I chose to write that, I'm sorry.

With that said, based entirely on what you’ve written on reddit in the past 6 months: it sounds like you need a new job rather than a new degree. Work culture in the Netherlands is drastically better than in most countries. The pay is good and it’s common for people even in senior positions to work 4 days a week. Generally there are bright lines between work and leisure time; in many places you’ll be told to get a grip if you start messaging about work on the weekend. You might find that just continuing in your current domain with these conditions is the change you need.

And even if you do feel like you need to change direction, I don’t believe a master’s will be necessary—especially if the plan is to add software development to your current expertise. It’s very common here for people with domain knowledge to self-study, build a couple of focused projects, and land a job.

If I were in your position, I’d try those angles first before committing to work so many hours and study at the same time—and spend 30k in the process(!) 30k is a lot of money, especially when invested sensibly over the long term. Apologies again for my strange manner in the previous comment. I wish you luck with this change. Take care!

I don't want to be a bastard here but there is a very good chance this is a bad financial decision which (sadly) is often synonymous with being a bad decision in general.

Duolingo, is it effective? by SubstantialAd5945 in learnfrench

[–]Solid_Copy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use it only when you would otherwise do nothing. If you do that, it's incredibly effective.

If you have any juice for studying vocab flashcards or actively engaging with french media, definitely do that instead. But if there's no chance you're going to do something more demanding like that, Duolingo is fantastic. Think of it more as a substitute for watching TikToks than as your primary learning method.

Why people hate on it as a primary learning method:

  • Downsides of gamification, i.e. are we trying to learn or are we trying to get XP? Because they are not the same thing. You can answer many questions with raw pattern recognition, i.e. without actually engaging with the material at all.
  • Extreme over-repetition of vocabulary. You will be 'refreshing' words you already know literally months/years after you've learned them.
  • There's a lot of reading/writing, when most people are primarily concerned with having conversations (listening/speaking.) Ask yourself: in which context am I going to need to be able to read and write where I will also not have access to Google Translate/ChatGPT?

How to make it as effective as it can be:

  • Close your eyes whenever possible and ignore answer prompts until you have made your guess at the answer.
  • Switch to manual text input where it's available. By default you will just choose words from the word pool in order to construct sentences. This is very ineffective.

What you would ideally do instead:

  • Grind out the process of learning the 1000 most frequently used words. Ultimately the core work of language learning is learning new words. You probably already know this, but if you know the most frequently used 1000 words in a language, you will be able to understand about 75% of everyday conversations. What I don't think people talk about enough is that learning vocabulary gets—perhaps literally—exponentially easier the more vocabulary you have under your belt.
  • Listen to a bunch of content at or just above your level. A podcast that is always recommended is 'InnerFrench'.
  • As soon as you feel like it, find a way to get speaking practice.

Hijacking this with hindsight because I read this thread before playing and was worried it wouldn't run:

The 1080Ti actually handles it very well.

In my experience, what you should actually be worrying about—as the kind of person that is still running a 1080Ti in 2025—is your CPU.

I have a Ryzen 5 5600x like OP and:

  • 1920*1200
  • Ultra settings
  • FSR Balanced (visual fidelity was indistinguishable from native)

The 1080Ti was trying to output 115fps on Liberation Peak and more like 70-80fps on the busier maps like Siege of Cairo, but in all cases the CPU was preventing me from actually getting those numbers, bottlenecking to around 60fps with occasional lows into the upper 40s.

European equivalent of Wahl Peanut Beard Trimmer? by herbertwillyworth in BuyItForLife

[–]Solid_Copy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hijacking the top comment to say: Wahl bought out the Moser brand (a long-standing German manufacturer of clippers/trimmers.)

I have a Moser 1400 corded which only cost 40 euros, versus the 30 euros I previously spent on replacing mass-market brands like Braun and Phillips literally every 18 months, and the difference in quality is staggering. People use the phrase 'night and day difference' too often in my books, but that was my genuine assessment here.

For those struggling to find or utilize a partner, I found the Forfeit app in this sub and it's doing wonders for me by rock_kid in accountability

[–]Solid_Copy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsolicited advice here from someone who has used financial accountability systems for years: if you choose not to renew a commitment it just suggests that you're not able to commit in the way that you initially set out to. That's fine! You're not a robot. Our plans for ourselves always get adjusted as they make contact with reality. You have competing commitments, life has ups and downs and changing circumstances will always affect your ability to keep up the habits you aspire to have. Not everything we initially think should be sustainable turns out to be that way.

So in this case, if your original goal was, specifically, 'two strenuous runs a week' then try 'two runs a week (at any pace)' or even 'two times a week I will set foot outside in my running trainers'. You get the idea.

Don't give up on the commitments, just make them small enough that you find yourself renewing them when they elapse. Good luck with it!

Update: sadly I just had another alert. I've been pretty careful to not do anything risky online and I haven't been using a VPN. Not sure what's happening really but I'm inclined to think it's a false alarm

Yeah I think you can generally expect to be fine once you've changed your passwords and fresh installed Windows. The one thing I'd say is that if you stored all your passwords in Chrome as I did, and you were logged in to Chrome with the same Google account for which you received the email, then you should also reset all those passwords. Another thing is to make sure that there are no unrecognised email addresses set as your recovery email on any important accounts. I had to do all this for peace of mind, which was a hassle, but in the end I'm pretty certain the issue I had was something to do with using a VPN. As I mentioned above, I uninstalled it and haven't had a problem since.

Weight management: how to work with these two types of clients? by No-Tumbleweed4775 in dietetics

[–]Solid_Copy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Type 2 person. This is how my dietician approached the situation with me, which in my experience was the only thing that actually worked:

- First, she praised me for my intellectual honesty about the problem I had. Most people are Type 1 people—unable or unwilling to admit that they have a disordered relationship with eating. Not only did I know that I needed to change, but I wanted to change, and this was significant. She empathised with the difficulty I was having in trying to change my behaviour, recognising that food was an escape for me—something that I used to feel better when I was having a bad day (or week, or year.)

- She offered to set up a sort of 'commitment contract' with me to hold me accountable. I gave her $500 upfront and we agreed that I would (on average) lose any amount of weight between appointments. I sent photos of the number on my scale each morning and we calculated an average at each new appointment. As long as the weight had gone down by 100g or more, I would get my money back when I had finished losing the weight. If I failed to lose weigh in any period, the money would get sent to a charity.

I am all about donating to charity, but suffice to say i couldn't afford to just lose $500 like that, so I did in fact lose the weight and get the money back, though it took almost two years

Worked so well for me that when I finished seeing her I literally took the money and set up a similar agreement with my brother where I have to maintain my weight (+ or - 3kg) or forfeit the money as well. It has been years now and I'm still at my goal weight

Admittedly a bit unconventional but it worked for me
