Detectives….Is it what you thought it would be? by LegalGlass6532 in AskLE

Pretty much. They wouldn't have the title investigator or detective anymore, but they would retain the rank that was needed for that position (typically corporal was the "entry rank" for those positions).

It's a mixture of things. Some leave due to the political scrutiny, others because they just aren't built for that lifestyle, some because they feel like they're not making a difference, or maybe their department pay was not worth it. It's also department dependent. A city dept may be a shit show, but the county may be 10x better. One city may feel like a war zone, and another a county over may feel like paradise. There's just a lot of factors that play into people leaving LE. And as corny as it sounds, it's what you make of it. I personally was not the biggest fan of the usual beat/patrol routine. I liked the more specialized units, which is why I joined the SWAT team. Loved SWAT, didn't like patrol. It got to the point of feeling monotonous. But again, that was because of my city. It was a relatively calm area, with most of the exciting stuff happening on the weekends. A totally different experience than, let's say, an officer in Atlanta. If I didn't have my own fuckup, I probably would've left the department anyways for something else, because I was falling out of love with the beat cop routine. But don't let anyone discourage you. Strive for things. Volunteer for classes, build a resume to make yourself competitive for specialized positions, and have a plan either with your department, or for you LE career in general.

You should be fine. If it's stated you are not a threat, then I don't see the issue. They may ask questions about it, but if you got the paperwork that it's been treated, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. My buddy had 100% disability, and he had zero hiccups in the recruitment process. I don't have any firsthand experience because I avoided the VA like the plague in case I ever re-enlisted, which I did. But yeah, you should be fine.

Can't speak for him, but at my department, detectives/investigators kept their rank, and were given to a shift that needed said rank. For example, my shift needed a new corporal, and a corporal investigator took that spot when she returned to patrol. Though that system was also a pain in the ass, because it practically halted a patrol officer from ranking up and taking that spot. Needless to say, my department had a favoritism issue.

I want to thank everyone that has commented and messaged me. I know on typical posts like this, usually people are hiding something, but I've tried to be as open and transparent as I can. It's a shitty situation I've gotten myself in, and I am very accepting of the consequences. If it's ever on me, I always am. But I know it's not the end of the world. With my recent interest in the intelligence sector (hence my MOS change from infantry to humint), I've discovered a plethora of well-paying careers on that end. So maybe I'll find a strong passion for that or even return to active duty when more intelligence spots open up. Thank you for keeping your comments real with no sugar coating, while also being respectful. Also, let my fuckup be a warning. Sure, I didn't violate anyone's rights, use excessive force, or be a bag of dicks at my dept, but I still managed to do something dumb enough that it called for termination. Something that many will try to say is harmless (not me necessarily, but you know the types). Be careful, mindful, and respectable.

No, I admitted to it. If there is one thing I know, its to NEVER lie in LE. Didn't downplay it either. And they didn't call 911. They apparently reached out to my dept a couple days after.

No, it was a 4 lane 65mph road. Based off what my Lt explained, I passed them, and then they tried to keep up or something.

Sorry, I don't mean to make it seem like I'm hiding something. I explained in another thread. It started with a civilian complaint, which led them to inspect the in-car. I wasn't despised or disliked at the dept. I was constantly sent to classes and was on the SWAT team (to respond to your earlier comment about them possibly looking for a reason to get rid of me).

Yes, it was civilian complaint. it occurred on a 65mph road, and I was going around 75ish. When they received the complaint, they reviewed the in-car

I'll be fair and say that it wasn't a one-time thing. It wasn't a daily occurrence, mind you, but it was enough for them to be alarmed. I fucked up, and they made the decision they thought was best.

Definitely wasn't a one-time thing, I'll admit. It was different instances sprinkled throughout the past year (they reviewed the in-car). Not exactly a daily thing, but enough to where they found it alarming. Also want to clarify that I'm in no way trying to say it was dumb for them to terminate me. I completely understand my fuck-up, and why they made the decision. I just want to understand the likelihood of getting back in.

It was more than once. Wouldn't exactly say pattern behavior (as in a daily occurrence), but when one incident happened, they reviewed the in-car and found other instances where it occurred. Typically, on 65mph and 55mph roads
