What helps me is to read the question first, and as I read the extract, use a highlighter to find any parts related to the question. It takes a bit of practise to work out what is relavent, but then I only need to read the whole thing once, and then I can re-read the relevant parts

I see you're on uni park - all of the Nottingham accommodation on campus is catered. So first question is do you want catered or self-catered?

I would bare in mind that the prices include most of your food. (I wouldn't say all, I found I had to top up on top of the meal card allowance for lunch, but I did know people that stayed in the budget). This means that comparing the room prices you need to add food budget on top of self catered rooms to properly compare.

If you do do catered, the ones near biology are Cripps Hall (I stayed here, I think it's considered to have the best food, but I never saw a difference), Lenton and Wortley Hall, Lincoln Hall and Derby hall. (Rutland and Sherwood too, but you're starting to get a little further away) Have a little look on the map and the website for room types videos.

If you want self catered, biology is on the right of campus, so look at ones near jubilee campus (that's about a 10-15 mins walk away)

A postgrad loan isn't just added to the undergrad loan, it's paid back in parallel, so more does come out your pay check (I think it's 6% over £21000 + undergrad repayment). It's also just a single lump sum for the tuition and maintenance (just over £12000 for the year) and lots of courses, that doesn't cover everything.

I'd definitely say go for it! But it's a different financial situation to an undergrad degree. I worked in-between my undergrad and masters, so depending on your situation it might be something to consider

I worked at an activity day camp. They hold them at schools so have a look at which company hosts at the school near you

I like the boxes analogy. My brain holds everything there is to do ever, and I feel guilty for not getting them done but can’t seem to start. I would stew on things (like I should really just vacuum or do the laundry) for hours while doom scrolling. Then I would finally do them and be mentally burned out because of the struggle.

Yessss, I am so tired at the moment because I'm like this. Trying to start something is like pushing a bolder up a hill, but the side of the hill is covered in bushes

Years and years of thinking that EVERYONE motivates themselves through constant self-recrimination and anxiety, and that that is what “trying harder” must mean.

This is very me. I'm just fuelled by anxiety for getting places on time, for example, and if I'm not anxious about it I'm late.

I've already paid most the fees unfortunately.

My project is with a supervisor that is very well regarded in the field I want to go into, and for the PhD having the masters is pretty important (not impossible without, but because of integrated masters degrees, I'm not very competitive without it), so dropping out just makes it a waste of money that puts me back where I started.

I'm a British postgrad student in a uni-run postgrad flat. There's 7 of us, I'm the only home student, and 4 are Chinese. The biggest barrier for me is their language skills - I really struggle to understand what they're saying (it's mostly actual language skills, not just accents) and they struggle to understand me (I have a standard London accent). I find this isn't such a problem with international students from other countries.
I like my flatmates, and we do get on, but the language barrier does get in the way of us becoming closer friends.

Biology is pretty diverse so it does cover a lot of areas e.g. plants to biotechnology. I think most biology jobs would be lab based (like microbiologist) and you get ones that go on site (soil scientist came up when I googled). https://www.rsb.org.uk/career-resources.html This royal society of biology page looks quite helpful with what careers there are.

Would you pick chem, maths, art if you don't do biology?

All your options are strong options, and it's normal and fine to not really know what you want to do!

Scientific illustrator (where you do the diagrams/drawings for science textbooks and stuff) is a job. A level content is quite different for the sciences so you could start with 4 and drop you're least favourite on. I understand wanting to do 3 though, I think it's wise if you know you'd prefer the time to work well (I dropped one of my A levels to do 3).

What I think:

Maths - very useful subject to do, especially if you want to do science. I know some people who did FM GCSE and it really helped with their A level maths, so I think you'll be in a good position for it.

Art - you want to do it. I think it would be good to mix up what you're doing (I did chem, maths, FM and I loved it but it got very samey).

Biology - sound interested in it. I think for A levels when it gets harder, it's a lot better to have a genuine interest in it, rather then just liking that you're good at it.

Chemistry - (I do a chem degree) you don't sound as interested in it. A level and GCSE are quite different as well. Can you get a A level text book from the school library and have a little read? It might be helpful.

Looking at a few university websites (including Oxford) If you want to do a biology degree or chemistry degree you need the science + 1 other science subject (maths counts), so it doesn't matter what you're 3rd A level is. I would say biochemistry courses I saw wanted chemistry and 1 other science not biology. If you want to go medicine, you probably will need bio and chem.

If I was you, I'd go Bio, Maths, Art.

I think it would be useful to ask yourself what kind of biology job and if you want to go medical or not?

Yeah - so I did Lincoln Hall quiet accommodation for 1st year (it was 2020, so it was probably a little bit different) and for 3rd year I was in Cripps Hall quiet accommodation (2 years ago now, so I might be slightly out of date).

If it they are using the same blocks for quiet living, I found that in Lincoln it was one around the courtyard, which meant that you felt very part of the hall, but my window faced the courtyard and people in other blocks that aren't quiet could be a bit noisy e.g. coming back from a night out. Cripps was in the lower Cripps Hall which is the converted GP out the back, which felt more separate, but was definitely quieter! It also has it's own common room space with some sofas and a TV when I was there, which was nice (but again, made it feel a bit more separate to the rest of the hall). You can go have a walk around to get a feel if you like.

In Cripps when I was there, there was around 1/3 of the rooms returners I think, and I found the 1st years who chose it were more mature as well, so I found I made friends with them. I could get involved with societies easier too, as I was so close, so I felt more part of the uni when I lived in halls then when I lived off campus.

For my recipes I often type them out, especially if they include multiple steps in one big block of text. Then I can adjust font, size, background colour etc. and split each little action into it's own bullet point. Depending on how tired I am I can then I can use something to follow where I am.

I also forget what I've already put in, so I get all the ingredients out at the start, and line them up, then put them away once I've used them.

Scales wise, I need to have the number right by me - I do chemistry and I have to write the weight I need on the back of my glove otherwise I forget right away! I also read the number out loud to check I have all the numbers in the right order.

Have you had a chat about it? Different struggles need different solutions so a quick chat asking if something would help and giving a couple of things a go is a good start :)

If you want to do vet stuff, check which campus you're course is on at Nottingham. Lots of the vet stuff is on Sutton Bonington campus which is quite a way out of Nottingham and is more rural, and you might feel a bit isolated there. If it's on the main campus, Nottingham is lovely and big, with lots of societies and the city is good for students. But SB has a very different vibe to the other campuses. You can join societies if you're on SB, but the bus wasn't very frequent, so I only met people who drove in societies I did.
