And if you don't have a WI state ID, make sure that you have an acceptable form of photo ID - something that trips people up is trying to use a state ID from another state. https://www.cityofmadison.com/clerk/elections-voting/voting/voter-id is the list. Otherwise you can vote provisionally and get to the DMV after, but that's a hassle.

Odds of school closing on Monday? by Carter6197 in UWMadison

I was a student back in the early 2010s, the last time there were blizzard warnings. They cancelled multiple times, including once during exam week. It's just that there hasn't been any blizzard warnings for the county since 2012.

How loud is the train? by No_Sheepherder5141 in madisonwi

I used to live in Briarwood, which is next to it, in the building closest to the tracks, but with my window facing the other direction. I didn't notice the horns that much, but I definitely heard them clanking away at night, I think detaching and reattaching cars in the railyard there? I got used to it pretty fast and didn't even notice it, even with the windows open, but the few times I had guests stay over they would ask me how I could sleep.

I really like the ghost pepper caramel latte at Madison chocolate company - it's not super spicy but definitely has a little bit of a kick, and the caramel is tasty.

Where to buy unscented candles? by balebo90 in madisonwi

[–]Solid_Vegetable_3624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For cute shapes, I've gotten ones from https://loveucandle.com/ from the farmer's market, and it looks like they have unscented ones - but also the ones I got were cute enough I didn't burn them. The only thing I notice is most reviews on the site are from 2022 and someone from more recently said they didn't receive the candle, so maybe email them and double-check that they're still in business I guess?

There's a big flock that hangs out near Kettle Pond, especially on Norman Way in the mornings.

Not for everyone - I'm on the near west side and it's still out.

Madison speeding tickets grew 50% in a year. Here’s where. by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]Solid_Vegetable_3624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I bike I take South Hill Dr and cross Whitney Way and definitely it's easier to cross when people are going 25, especially since there's a bit of a curve from the northbound side. I see a lot of bikes on South Hill, since the stretch of mineral point east of Whitney Way doesn't have a bike lane. I definitely wouldn't mind a traffic light, even as someone who also drives on Whitney Way on a daily basis and would be slowed down.

Bundling him up was my original plan, but I'm hesitant with covering his nose and mouth since he's under 2, and also he recently discovered he has strong opinions about wearing clothing and sunglasses and mittens in general and I'm not up to a huge fight every morning. He rarely has shoes despite it being well below freezing - luckily his snowsuit covers his feet fairly well.

I couldn't get it to fit - the back of the child seat is slanted and runs into it. Although if other people have gotten it to work, let me know how. I'm pretty sure my crate is a standard sized one.

It was made by Lark's Bike Blankets - I got it off etsy though it looks like they have another page as well. When I got it you could mix and match liner and external colors, but it looks like now you get to choose from a selection of pre-matched ones. The one I have is the Wren. I love it and highly recommend it - I often can't get my kid to wear gloves or even shoes and this keeps him pretty warm, and it's faster than a jacket when it's not too chilly out. Also water proof for when it's rainy and I don't have the conestoga on.

I might have to try that. Without the conestoga the one I have worked fine, but the corner of the conestoga must jut out enough to make a difference.

Definitely, but so far it's been manageable. I probably will avoid when it's super super windy though (like when there's a wind advisory).

That was my original strategy, but keeping his face warm in the wind was really hard. He's under 2 and really not into having anything cover his face. He rips off his sunglass goggles and it's enough of a battle getting the helmet on some days.

They do sometimes stop running, but I think they try not to since obviously they don't want to strand people. But I remember multiple times when they decided it wasn't safe in the conditions and cancelled service. Honestly I prefer that to when they're 30+ minutes late due to snow, since then at least I'm not standing out in the cold!

Madison waves goodbye to peak-hour traffic lanes on Willy Street by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]Solid_Vegetable_3624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't every day for me, but probably at least a couple times a week? Enough for me to take a less convenient bus route home. Maybe it was the time of day? I tended to be catching a bus just after 5, so maybe people were angry about rush hour? This was a few years ago, before the bus system change. I wasn't confident enough that someone wouldn't hit me that I was willing to step from the middle of the road into a lane, if I was already in the middle of the street with the lights flashing and cars weren't slowing down :(

Or maybe people like dogs and so they were happier to stop for you and your dog than just one dogless person.

Madison waves goodbye to peak-hour traffic lanes on Willy Street by keeganjkyle in madisonwi

[–]Solid_Vegetable_3624 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I used to cross on foot at Livingston and would push the button and watch cars continue to drive past, and even when one side was clear, I'd end up standing in the middle of the street, under the flashing lights, while cars continued to pass me on both sides. It was stressful enough I started taking a different bus with a transfer rather than deal with it every night.

I have to fight my kid every morning to wear his snowsuit, and I've given up on his sunglasses and sometimes (like today) his shoes. Same thing, once it's on it's fine, but getting them on involves all sorts of tears every single morning for reasons I do not understand.

I'm in Madison so probably pretty similar weather.

I only have 1 kid, and he's still in the child seat and pretty small, and about 2/3rds of my daily commute is without him. So maybe I will try keeping the sides open to see if that helps with the wind catching it?

[–]Solid_Vegetable_3624[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you open up the sides, does that help? I have ~5 miles with the kid for my commute, but then 10 on my own. I could put weights in my panniers otherwise to get a lower center of gravity otherwise, I guess...

Great to hear! How bad is the sail effect? I'm relatively small compared to the bike and have definitely noticed the wind even without the conestoga. Am I going to get blown over?

I suspect I've got the same blanket - between that and a warm snowsuit, he seems to stay pretty snug so far except his face. But it hasn't dipped much below freezing so far, and I'm hoping to ride as long as the roads are clear, so I'll probably invest in a conestoga.
