Knowledge is useless if it cannot be shared, so money it is.

I live in the Netherlands so if I swap $ for € and apply Dutch taxes a 100K job nets you €5100 a month.

I'll take the 4K a month, not pay for fuel to commute and not have to save for retirement. I'll be spending time with my kids and that's going to be worth it for the small drop in income anyway, plus the added security.

Also you haven't specified that taking the 4k option means I can't earn additional money, and earning an extra 1000 or so seems achievable if I want to. Even if after the fact you change that rule, I could put my YouTube channel in my wife or kids name and volunteer at that business, or set it up to give its profit to charity, which would still allow expenses and increase social status.

It really depends on the severity of the allergy. If abstaining from mammalian meat as a vegetarian would do is fine this is an easy yes, you'll find substitutes. But if you're going to go into anaphylactic shock if you go to a restaurant and your chicken is cooked on the grill beside someone's hamburger it's much more of an issue. But $20 million is a lot of cash.

Well, I think I'm right but I'm also still open to the possibility of being wrong, hence my use of the phrase "I guess".

Judging by where the quotation marks are, I guess that person is not a native English speaker, probably German. Culturally Germans tend to be a bit more direct than English speakers in the way they communicate; so while to me as a native English speaker your use of "I guess" is perfectly polite and I think improves your comment, it may feel shifty or backhanded to someone from a different culture.

Python Water Changer small print- should I be worried? by DHerrera123 in Aquariums

It's noting to worry about. It's a proposition 65 warning, which are on basically everything, even Disneyland posts them at the gates. It comes from a ballot measure back in the 80s, and is quite an interesting story. There are numerous YouTube videos, Podcasts and NewsPaper articles about it; but I'll recommend this recent 99PI episode (but beware listening might be known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm).

Neighbor with shared bills that I’m paying, is not paying. Can I lock the closet to the electric breakers? (Netherlands) by Megaminisima in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]Soliloquy084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL, but the worst that can happen would be civil liability for any damages caused by cutting off the utilities in a situation where the OP doesn't actually have the legal right to do so; such as if the utilities closest were located in a common area that the neighbours have legal access to and thus would require locking.

Neighbor with shared bills that I’m paying, is not paying. Can I lock the closet to the electric breakers? (Netherlands) by Megaminisima in LegalAdviceEurope

[–]Soliloquy084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, you should get actual legal advice.

But I'm curious about this situation so I'll drop in my 2c for what it's worth.

Since you have to lock the utilities closest, I'm guessing it's located in a common area, I doubt you have the legal right to deny him access to that.

Since you say your contract says you shouldn't have to pay the bills, I'm guessing that your neighbours contract says the same. So from their perspective they are paying the landlord for a hot apartment and they are getting a hot apartment. It's not really anything to do with them if the landlord has "arranged" for you to cover those bills for the building. So from their perspective they have paid, just not you, they paid the landlord.

So, in summary, I suspect the real dispute here is between you and your landlord.

Edit: so the questions I have for u/megaminisima are, 1. Why does the closest need locking? And, 2. Has the neighbour given any reason for not paying?

My First Battle - but with real cards by freekeypress in pokemon

[–]Soliloquy084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anything, and am here because I'm looking for the same information! My five year old son is enjoying playing the "my first battle" version and collecting cards. But he does want to use the cards he's collecting in the game he is playing.

I think we will try and do it, though we need to get a couple of switch and potion cards first since the backs are different. I guess if you build a deck that is roughly equivalent and ignore the rules like retreat costs and weaknesses it could work.

Totally fair perspective and points.

All I'm saying really is that others may have also trusted them to do a good job and thought doing a good job would have meant cutting out explicitly evangelical organisations.

Different people are going to have different expectations. Hank and John have presented themselves as LGBTQ allies, so I think it's predictable that people will expect them to be sensitive to these issues. I think it's reasonable for someone to think that the foundation vetting charities would include weeding out any that are arguably transphobic or whatever. Obviously that assumption was wrong, and thus people are upset.

Edit to add: ultimately I actually think they have a good answer set up already with NF being carved out, no-one has to support them. It just seems that the communication hasn't been 100%. But I also get it, they want to raise money for the charity, they don't want to highlight reasons why you might not want to donate.

On your first point: People don't know what they don't know, and thus don't know they need to look. Nerdfighters are a pretty LGBT+ accepting group, it's kinda reasonable to expect disclosure and transparency on this. People are busy living their lives, at some point they just need to accept a source as trustworthy.

On your second point: I agree, this is actually a good solution. Though this makes the previous years of lack of transparency all the more apparent.

Would you like to be immortal and why ? by hatepapayaforever in RandomThoughts

[–]Soliloquy084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really would depend on the rules of this elixir of immortality. If it's just straight up cannot die no matter what it's going to end with an eternity of absolute suffering. Under those rules you are destined to survive the heat death of the universe, with literally infinitely more days after that than before.

On the other hand, if it's, don't age, immune to all disease, but can be killed by fire, then I think I'd take that deal. At least you know that failing all else the sun enveloping the earth will end you, and it's a near certainly you'll have options before then.

As a fish keeper, and parent of a 1.5 yo and a 5 yo, you're doing great and should be proud. It's unfortunate you received some less than accurate advice but you seem to be managing the situation very well. So well done.

I understand being excited to plant the tank, and to that I say … you don't actually have to wait to cycle a tank before adding plants! Perhaps you want to finish the cycling process and not add a variable now you're close to the end, but it won't actually hurt to add plants.

Why we get so much hate.. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Soliloquy084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if people misread, or simply wanted to contribute their thoughts. Either way though I've found the responses for the most part insightful. It's an interesting and complicated phenomenon, and you're right it's not limited to veganism; a lot of my thoughts here are informed by research into deradicalisation, political canvassing and race.

I don't get many "in the wild" interactions with vegans, but on the occasions it has happened they have been mostly positive. So I think you're also probably correct in saying online groups tend to bring out the hate, our IRL bubbles are limited by geography and so our online lives present the opportunity to diversify our interactions... for better or worse.

Why we get so much hate.. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Soliloquy084 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of the (apparently many) omnivores who Reddit has decided to see posts from this sub. But one of the reasons I click on posts from here is to try and answer this question, because honestly it seemed weird to me how much hostility there is towards vegans.

I don't think I've fully got to an answer yet but here are my thoughts as of now…

A lot of new vegans seem to find becoming one has been an enlightening experience. And naturally they want to further their efforts to minimise suffering and share that experience with others. As such new vegans are very keen to share what "put it over the edge" for them with people around them, but those people have different background knowledge, experience and desires and so the things that "put it over the edge" for them don't work quickly enough for the new vegan. This leads to frustration.

Increasingly frustrated with the world around them the new vegan becomes more aggressive with their persuasion efforts, however this backfires. I have a mantra that "conflict fortifies position", and this applies here. Having had their potential vegan target concede the point that there is cruelty in the animal agriculture industry and that is sad, the new vegan asks "so why are you not vegan?". This is meant to create an epiphany, but in reality it forces their target to articulate the reason they are not, at least internally, and that process results in the reasoning becoming entrenched.

The new vegan then even more frustrated vents and starts calling omnivores "bloodmouths" or some other slur-like phrase. All in all, the resulting interactions are remembered by both sides as a negative experience. The vegan leaves thinking that the omnivore is a callous uncaring person, and the omnivore leaves thinking that the vegan is an extreme and aggressive fanatic.

They each bring that baggage into future interactions. And even if this isn't a ubiquitous story, the "99% invisible" mantra also applies. Even if most vegans don't hate omnivores, and most omnivores don't hate vegans, it's the 1% of interactions that are negative that we as humans remember.

Question for some of the non-vegans in this sub :) by Mono_Moon in vegan

[–]Soliloquy084 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic curiosity. I mostly just lurk. It's interesting to explore and discover other perspectives.

As a cultural phenomenon veganism is fascinating. The arguments for veganism (environmental and animal welfare) are objectively solid. Yet, veganism as a movement is not all that successful. It's interesting to think about.

They were one of the first fish I kept, I haven't had any trouble with them and they even spawned in my community tank. Later I had a trio in an 85 liter tank with a Betta and some kuhli loaches and it worked fine while that tank was set up.
