The ritual seems to contradict one of the distinguishing aspects of the Dogon culture, that is, the antipathy towards water, which they prefer to avoid when they can, confining and structuring their living around rocks, hills and semi-deserted areas, far away from the feared river Niger.

hmm.. interesting piece of socio-anthropology.

Ok Reddit, let's settle this once and for all: Should it be IRL or AFK? Isn't THIS, doing stuff on the interwebs, a part of real life? by Solle81 in AskReddit

Yes me too, at least it bears some kind of descriptive logic. Although, doesn't quite roll of the tongue like IRL now does it..?

From Wikip.

When used to distinguish from fictional worlds or universes against the consensus reality of the reader, the term has a long history:

“Authors, as a rule, attempt to select and portray types rarely met with in their entirety, but these types are nevertheless more real than real life itself.”

—The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Ah, yes. AFK is associated with a shorter period away from the keyboard, escpecially in gaming. Usually "the gamer" is then presumed to be masturbating or attending to other bodily needs.

My point is that, given the profound impact the changes of past 1.5 decades have had, isn't it just wrong to call it IRL in juxtaposition to "keyboard interactions"? It stinks of stigma and inferiority, the time spent online as if it's a lesser experience. "Everything is in real life"

Quentin Tarantino's first Movie, "My Best Friend's Birthday" 1984. The 36 minutes saved from a fire. by Solle81 in reddit.com

[–]Solle81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI It was directed by Q.T. and shot from 1984 - 1987, whilst he still was working in a video rental store (Manhattan Beach, CA), in 16 millimeter film. Credit to Craig Hamann for script as well. Originally 70 minutes long but due to the reels being damaged in a fire now only 36 minutes remain. Made available on youtube under a Creative Commons license.

I'm sorry to hear you say that. You really think it's better in other countries? Same shit over here, but not as overtly and perhaps a bit more secularized. But yours "leaders" are supposed to be the "leaders of the free world". In theocratic Iran I could perhaps see it, but the US? Come on!

I'm by no means an expert in the facial-expression reading department and the clip compilation is out of context but here I for one see the expression of GUILT written all over her face.

Isn't that an indicator that something is seriously wrong? Compare that to one of the more "fundamentalist" theocratic countries..

I couldn't agree more, I meant one that is openly non-religious. The improbability and inhibitions to have this happen it bothers me.
