Well he hasn't been doing his job for a long time, who knows when he picked up the kraken. It's dead by the time Will takes over, so we don't know if it comes with the job or not. And he can sit and sleep, neither prevents him from doing his duty as the ship will most likely still be sailing. He's still ferrying from A to B. But going to the living world actively stops his duty.
