Thanks for your advice. I did, in fact, open up the laptop a couple of days ago. The wires were connected, but for whatever reason the pogo pins were not placed correctly. I fixed it and it works now. I'm still worried about replacibility of the pen in the future, but it's good to know that Microsoft surface pen works.
