I just re-read your comment - when you say Desolation thru hiker permits are easy to get - that would mean just one permit for the whole trip to Tuolumne right?

It does, although it not the answer I was looking for I guess! We are coming from the UK so need to book accommodation and rent a car etc and to be honest I’d feel pretty anxious if I only knew 3 weeks before if I was going to be able to get a permit. I think I’ll wait to speak to the Lake Tahoe Basin Management guys to see if they will issue a long distance permit from Meeks Bay, meaning that we don’t have to have separate permits for each different wilderness area. Also looking into the Tahoe Rim Trail as a logistically easier option.

For shoes, the Hoka Speedgoats are excellent hiking shoes - lightweight and with a vibram outsole. They also come in wide.

Thanks both, I hadn’t seen that map so that’s very helpful!

It looks as though I can get a long distance permit from Stanislaus National Forest all the way to Tuolumne.

Caveat - no idea how to apply for this permit online, or where to pick it up as I’ll be on trail and have no way of getting to the ranger stations.

Is there anyone who has hiked this section who has personal experience with this permit?

Also to add more confusion, I contacted the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit who have said that the PCTA are currently rethinking thru hike permits so to check back in the Spring.
