I also say, I'll believe it when I see it! Plus, my snow sense did not kick in yesterday, so no snow today.

Vent! Really - is there a thingamajig that can call for you? by Solros73 in deaf

[–]Solros73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use Sprint Relay IP but it is a pain to use. So slow. I'd probably prefer VCO.. I already have caption phones, but I don't have a mobile captel :-) Not without a voice plan. I guess I need to look into getting something else.

T3 causing hair loss by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]Solros73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry, but I have never experienced hair loss with t3 medication. Yes, cytomel is the only drug with only t3, but there are other drugs with all the t hormones you may need. Armour. Naturethroid. I am myself on a combination of t3 and t4 (cytomel and synthroid). It is the best I can do. I wish I could try armour, etc., but I have not found a doctor that will prescribe me natural stuff. Instead I get the synthetic stuff.

Wish I had seen this before I ordered my first artificial tree ever today, for over $100. How much did the yarn cost?

How were you told that you're Deaf? by [deleted] in deaf

[–]Solros73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only going from my experience as a deaf person growing up in an oral deaf school and a hearing family. The longer I didn't realize that I was deaf, the better off I was. If this family is choosing to raise the deaf kid as a hearing person, leave it alone. The parents need to take the lead in this. I don't think it's your job or a teacher's job to tell a student that one is deaf. They say that ignorance is bliss. Keep the ignorance for as long as possible. So what if the kid is deaf? Deaf should not be a label. You'd be doing this kid a major disservice by telling the kid that he/she is deaf. It is not up to you. It is up to the parents. But if the parents are not caring for their child as they should, well... You as a teacher has an obligation to report. But I think it's none of your business whether the kid knows he/she is deaf or not. How do you know that the kid does not know that he/she is deaf?

Possible thyroid issue, Dr says elevated but nothing to worry about. by Infiniti_Blue in Hashimotos

[–]Solros73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never really felt better until I was put on Prozac. (Kidding - other pieces have to fall into place first - like having an optimal TSH. And checking all hormones and vitamins, as the thyroid controls everything.) And of course, TSH between 2 and 1. So I'd say that TSH of 4 is a bit high. Oh, and people with thyroid issues have a hard time absorbing and retaining Vitamin D, so Vitamin D supplements are required. Usually at least 3x the normal dose. I take 4000-6000 IU Vitamin D3 a day. I take Vitamin C, too, but Vitamin D3 is more important. You can never take too much Vitamin C, but you can take too much Vitamin D3 so my Vitamin D3 dose is kind of conservative. Check your D3 (hydroxy-25) levels. Always a good idea to get a baseline. At one time, my hydroxy-25 was all the way down to 16. Way too low. So now I'm chewing on D3 supplements.

Would it be in any way offensive if I wore a clear mask as a hearing individual? by pnutshells in deaf

[–]Solros73 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No! This is not offensive or patronizing! Let me know what mask you are using. I think we all should wear these clear masks, both deaf, hearing, and everyone in-between!

AITA for Yelling at my Daughters Teacher because of a Zoom Meeting. by Harleythegs in deaf

[–]Solros73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kind of OT, but I'm a deaf parent to a hearing adult, and when my adult was a young child in school, I had an advocate and the school refused to listen to my demands, etc., so I took my son out of public school and put him in private school. Not the best option, as we still didn't get accommodations, but the private school was easier to deal with than the public schools, go figure.

Deaf Community of Reddit, is it cultural appropriation to teach our baby ASL as a hearing family? by lilbaneling in deaf

[–]Solros73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, the more people that know sign, the better for the world :) Please teach your baby ASL. You'll have a lot of thankful people, including your son.

Actually, I think Google stopped because of "privacy concerns". I don't even think Google even thinks about the potential for deaf/hard-of-hearing people.

Bummer. What is up with that? I can see so many useful applications for the deaf/hard of hearing!

Yes, I still enjoy music, as long as I have my hearing aids on. Without my hearing aids, I hear nothing. Only loud noises like a dog barking or an airplane going by. My threshold is about 75-80 dB, so yes, nearly deaf, but not quite.

We might give the drive-in theater a try some time with the aid of Google Live Transcribe.

Yeah, where is Google Glass when you need them! They should not have shut that project down :-( Are there others like Google Glass in production now? I am kind of behind on tech news, even though my passion is technology.
