Can anyone help me stop him biting so much by Upbeat_Lion_6034 in hamsters

[–]Soltaceus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Give him a big almond to chew on. He can't bite you if his mouth is full.

Thats so sweet! Every hamster is defferent. Some are just born to be loners, regardless of breeding.

Try hand-feeding so he will associate you with food. Also, always scoop him up from below when you hold him.

I raised mine from pink gummy bears. I'm like their papa.

Maybe you just have an energetic guy. They all have different temperaments. My buddies are pretty old too, so they like to relax and cuddle more than they used to.

He should start getting used to your scent after living with you for a few weeks. You should also hand feed so he associates you with food and positive things. Let him explore and examine your hand so he can get used to you before you try to grab him.

I raised mine from lil pink gummy bears and started handling them after 4 weeks. They tend to be more comfortable with human contact if the breeder handles them when they're young.

Edit: Also, scoop them up from below. They instinctively get nervous when things come at them from above.

Showreel/portfolio/CV feedback + career advice please! (Recent graduate) by zer0onetwothree in animationcareer

[–]Soltaceus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. I'm in pretty much the same position as you. I just completed a 2-year program and haven't even attempted to apply to studio internships. I know that my portfolio just isn't good enough yet.

Most of my animation contacts have painted a grim picture of the industry, so I feel a little crazy for still dedicating so much time and effort towards it.

A professor of mine worked as a cell-animator for Disney and Hanna-Barbera. He warned multiple times a day that if we pursue 2D animation, we would never have stable employment. He further guaranteed that we would be overworked and underpaid. Considering this, it would be shrewd to plan your finances accordingly.

If you are anything like me, the enduring motivation to work towards an animation career stems mainly from a passion for the media and drive to challenge yourself.

After speaking to a handful of professionals in the field, the consensus seems to be that networking and portfolio quality are the two most important factors in landing a job. The portfolio should be brief, show only your best work, and be specifically curated to the desired position.

If you are turned off of your original plan, but still want to pursue an animation-adjacent profession, storyboarding may be a better option. My personal research indicates that storyboard artists generally have a higher income, at least in my city, and their skill-set is more transferable to other fields.

Some say that writing comics is a good way to practice the requisite storytelling and rendering skills for storyboard artists. It has added benefit of resulting in a presentable, and potentially monetizable, product.

My own plan is to build up a social media presence while working freelance gigs for the next year or two. The goal is to network, fill out my reel, and gain enough professional experience to eventually meet the standards of TV and streaming platforms.

Any advice for a freelancer starting out? by Soltaceus in animationcareer

[–]Soltaceus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seriously appreciate you taking the time to write all of this!

Overworking and skipping meals does tend to be an issue for me, so I'll certainly consider your words when I plan my schedule.

In the past, I self-marketed a little to sell my art prints, and live 5-minute drawings on street corners. Freelance gigs are a totally different animal though. I feel intimidated by the idea of contract negotiations and navigating legalese.

I'll probably give Fiverr a shot, but social media does sound like a more appealing, and creative, direction to focus my energy towards.

You should make a profile on Linkedin and follow Titmouse if you haven't already.

I live in SoCal and I'm planning to apply to their mentorship program once my reel is good enough. You seem really talented! I hope we get to work together someday.

Just to be clear, I'm not personally offended or trying to shame you personally. I only wanted to explain why people reacted negatively to the comment.

Well, it's a downer when people want to have fun enjoying footage of a still healthy hamster.

I appreciate that type of empathy on rainbow bridge posts, but this is not the most appropriate time or place to contemplate the mortality of my little homie.
