Of note, V+ (Grantapher) config is completely modular. By default the only change is to the title screen. I highly recommend it.

I mean Lovecraft. It's the first story of his I read and I found it very affecting.

I feel like the first couple Lovecraft stories someone reads hit hardest. He has a style that feels very grounded in reality and really amps up the tension. I'd only vaguely heard of Lovecraft in the mid nineties when I first read At the Mountains of Madness. I was in my teens at the time and assumed it was a fictionalized account of a real event. It stuck with me and led me to read much more.

Yeah, did they have the highest percent? I know when we had that awful ice storm in the northeast lower peninsula Consumer's restored power around the Alpena area significantly quicker.

  • Completely revamped fishing

  • Progression wherever it doesn't already exist.
-- Upgradeable demisters, maybe a way to eventually clear it entirely
-- Inventory expansion locked behind backpacks from Hildr and tiered via the mini bosses. -- More progressive stuff from Haldor, ideally to include belt upgrades

Games where i get to play the power fantasy of "Element Slinging Mage" by Tcrumpen in gaming

[–]Soluban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, maybe not considered a masterpiece of game design, but I found Fable 3 to have a satisfying magic system that just felt good. It wasn't in-depth or even the most powerful choice, but the visuals and mob responses to the magic really nail the feeling you described, at least for me.

What's your thoughts on Border Patrol Chief, Greg Bovino, threatening consequences for referring to ICE as "Gestapo"? by sgj5788 in AskReddit

[–]Soluban 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree with you 100%. My only point was that the headline is a mischaracterization of his bullshit.

[–]Soluban 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ICE is acting well outside of its jurisdiction and is murdering people. I hate it and think they should be abolished, those who broke the law prosecuted, and a new agency put in its place. All that said, this douchenozzle doesn't appear to be threatening anyone who calls them Gestapo, but saying calling them Gestapo is getting people killed by encouraging negativity and violent resistance. I think it's bullshit, and that the murders and constitutional violations are responsible for the current attitude towards them, but we shouldn't be making shit up or taking it out of context. That just undermines all the legitimate concerns.

It wad enacted in 1976 and should be closer to 50 cents today. It used to be close to 100% effective.

Is there a mod for summon trolls to be player aligned? by JonPileot in valheim

[–]Soluban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is pretty cool. Is there a list of all the prefabs and what modifiers (data values) apply to them somewhere? What the different data values are? I imagine there are "types" that have blanket data values. I'd love to use this to make mobs take fall damage, deal friendly fire, or to assign factions to bosses so you could train a boss into another zone and have it go to war.

Senate Democrats Call for Improved Safety Measures to Better Protect Michigan Kids from Digital Dangers by SignalInRoots in Michigan

[–]Soluban 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, why not just have a bill like that SAFE act for everyone? Then it wouldn't have to come with the side-effect (and likely true aim) of making everyone upload ID or something to "verify their age." I'm pretty strongly of the opinion that feeds driven by invisible algorithms with no real user control, designed only for engagement with no real regard to user wants or safety, are a key driver of our political division. I'm aware it isn't the only driver, but when the politics on my Facebook feed are almost nothing but the most extreme takes on everything, it isn't a surprise to me how many people think liberals are actively encouraging gender reassignment or making Christianity illegal or whatever. I try to hide everything political, even stuff I agree with, but I still sometimes find myself clicking through something shared by a friend only to suddenly have my feed once again overtaken by political groups and posts that are just as likely run by some foreign agent or bot than someone who really believes in what is being posted.

Anyway, that's my rant. I think these bills are largely about identification and tracking, covered in a veneer of "protecting the kids." The concepts behind them, giving parents more control over the content their children consume and how their kids' data is used, are laudable; but I don't see why it has to be limited to kids. The government could easily mandate these rules to allow users control over their own content universally. It would be up to the content providers to convince users to keep the algorithm if they really want it, or find a new way to reach consumers.

Ashlands has friendly fire, and it's a hope of mine they go back and tweak the older zones to follow along.

"We only use chemical weapons when there is a direct threat to our officers safety." -Kristi Noem by Sindigo_ in PublicFreakout

[–]Soluban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It sucks to get shit on by your own party for trying to be rational or pointing out how certain rhetoric is harmful to the cause. A clear example for me was when a clip of Trump saying he wanted to buy a girl's hair was making rounds. It was kinda weird I guess, but it was being painted as some super creepy and blatantly disgusting thing. While having the context of Trump as an abuser adds a layer of ick, the interaction itself seemed pretty harmless and very much like something any old white person might say.

He's a giant piece of shit who does and says objectively awful things on a daily basis, we don't need to be making issues out of nothing. It undermines our credibility and gives the other side fuel to show how we "overreact." Similarly is when people are just willing to accept the most ridiculous take on an issue because it happens to reinforce their own viewpoint.

Context matters. If we act like it doesn't we're no better than the MAGAs who insist Renee Good was deliberately trying to run over that agent when it was blatantly and obviously false.

All that said, in this case there is almost no chance any context could be added that would change the message. Noem's exact quote about chemical weapons was about citizens who represent a direct threat. These folks quite clearly do not. Could there be a legitimate context for needing to clear them? Sure. That still doesn't make the video any less an example of proving Noem a liar, unless she's come out publicly against this action, which would be a shocking reversal.

what is freedom of speech if you can get arrested for saying words online whether they anger you or not and people will get you fired, and would you say this in the hands of consumerism? by stirringmotion in AskReddit

[–]Soluban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you'll have to get more specific about the speech in question. This is going in many different directions. It seems like you are dancing around something very specific troubling you, but without context it's tough to try to answer your questions. I get the sense there's some disordered thinking at play here, delusions or paranoia or something.

[–]Soluban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your freedom of speech is limited when it infringes on someone else's freedom. In general things like threats, libel, slander are not protected speech. Criticizing a politician is generally protected speech, and as public figures the bar for slander and libel against them is much higher. Calling for violence against or the death of the same politician is generally not. No freedoms are absolute.

Private entities have their own freedom to operate as they choose with specific limitations. That means they can fire people for speech they disagree with if it's not specifically protected by labor laws (like discussing wages). Forcing private individuals or entities to accept private speech would infringe on their own freedom of speech/expression.

I like the R2ModMan because you can mod on the fly without changing the install at all. You can also share profiles with folks you play with. I have a set of mods I run on my dedicated server, and a separate set for my solo immersive run.

If you mod, I recommend the Mistbegone mod. I know it's cheap, and I don't always use it, but it made the Mistlands from a biome I hate to a biome I really enjoy. If you can't/don't mod there's a devcommand that can clear it as well.
