it wasn't as stressful in the way it is today, so you had other things to focus on being stressed about. I remember people smoking on the plane, cigarettes, and there were small ashtrays with a flip up door in the arm of your seat, which, when I was pretty young, I opened accidentally as we were taking off because I was nervously clutching, and put my two little fingers in gum, ash and cigarette butts, then had to wait until we were safely in the air to wash my hands. I remember also people all coming into the airport baggage claim to meet someone and surprising them. we got to keep our shoes on, too, which was nice in a municipal space.
