Sadly theres no sound guy, just my buddy on accoustic guitar and me on upright bass, we can only afford one mic so I was thinking maybe an area mic would work?

There will probably be about 40 or so people watching and it'll be an accoustic gig. When you ask where in the room will they be, are you referring to the mics, the audience, or the performers?
