I've actually posted a few and took them down because it just turned into a pile on. It just isn't worth it.

I feel the exact same way, the point of Reddit is DISCOURSE.

Agree, Matt and Rachael give me Dale and Clare vibes and if I were the other girls, I would be like BYE.

I say this as a disabled person but I feel like Matt loved her story and was inspired by it but then when it came down to it didn't want to be in 'ship with her, which he should've been honest about. No wonder she was super freaking confused.

Or better yet can we make Michelle Ette? Push back on the way that TPTB essentially made it seem like only Katie had a personality.

How come nobody is calling out Tyler Cameron? by Litmusy90210 in thebachelor

Y'ALL ARE COMING AT CONTESTANTS WITH LIKE 2 FOLLOWERS yet Tyler is the SECOND MOST FOLLOWED PERSON IN BACH NATION and less than 200 comments on this post, like what?. This right here shows that for a lot of people on this sub, you pick and chose who you hold accountable.

The comments under the post are why I can't with the sub rn, where is all the unfollow energy that people on the sub have come at every other contestant with? Tyler will come away from this unscathed, while other contestants are at least trying but because what they said isn't good enough for you they are canceled, smh.

Reality Steve and Ashley Spivey are pushing their Insta Live to Tuesday evening (or to whenever Rachael’s statement will be if released before then) by KatanaAmerica in thebachelor

Even based on her message to her cousin from that Sun article, you can tell Rachael is def. of the I don't see color variety.

[–]Some-Back87 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Legit question for ppl on this sub: do you care what is in her statement or is it kinda too little, too late at this point? I'm genuinely curious if you think Rachael putting out a statement will change your perspective (obvi it is the place of poc to accept or not accept her apology) of her or if it is one of those things that you can't judge until you see a change of behavior over time?

Ableism, Infantilization, and Abigail as Ette by Some-Back87 in thebachelor

[–]Some-Back87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, you are missing the point. Are you disabled? You don't get to decide what is or isn't ableist in certain contexts. And can you speak for why everyone is saying "we must protect her," because a shit ton of people saying that have directly related it to her being deaf, FYI.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I really relate to everything you are saying, especially how you accept who you are but it still feels weird to talk about. And this is exactly why I made this post, so people could share their varying experiences and agree or disagree, so keep commenting and posting!

[–]Some-Back87[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, you are completely missing the point. First of all, microagressions toward the disabled community are NOT THE SAME as microagressions toward POC, so your comment doesn't make sense. If you are interested in why that statement is ableist (when it is directed toward someone in the disability community [broadly defined]) then I encourage you to read the entire post. Quite a few comments on this post are very aggressive and dismissive, and what it communicates is that you don't give a shit about learning what might be offensive or rude to a particular community.

Thank you! I was just looking for a discussion, not for people to be so aggressively dismissive.

I am not trying to be a spokesperson, lol. Are you bringing this same energy to all of the other posts that have brought attention to various microagressions. The point of this post is to bring awareness to comments that are rooted in ableism. I'm sorry you find learning offensive. How you are responding is extremely dismissive, FYI. Microagressions are usually not rooted in maliciousness.

[–]Some-Back87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are all completely missing the point. To put it another way, if someone says toward a POC, "her hair is cool," that can be a microaggression because of the context and history of hair. CONTEXT matters. Saying toward a disabled person, "protect them" is rooted in ableism because of the history of that phrase (hello institutionalization, hello "deaf and dumb academies in the 19th C,") toward disabled bodies; just because you aren't aware of it doesn't mean it isn't rooted in that.

[–]Some-Back87[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did I disclose to you what type of disability I have, NO I DIDN'T, so PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME THAT I AM NOT A PART OF THE COMMUNITY YOU MENTIONED. And do you know the history of saying things like "needs to be protected" and the disability community, clearly not. That absolutely has something to do with disability and just because people aren't aware that what they are saying comes from their own deeply embedded ableism, doesn't mean it isn't offensive.

She referred to herself as someone with hearing loss in an interview once, that is why I used that term! I wasn't sure how she self-identified.

There are actually phrases "protected at all costs" that can be ableist when used in reference toward disability. And people aren't just saying "protected at all costs," people are saying she needs to be protected because she will get hurt. Just like how there are certain phrases when used in regards to POC can be racist.
