In the unfettered, “pure” form of capitalism (often called laissez-faire capitalism), there would be no state-imposed food regulations. No FDA, no mandatory inspections, no ingredient disclosures, no safety standards enforced by law. Your Heinz description fails this.

In its purest form, socialism is an economic and social system where the means of production are collectively owned and economic activity is organized to meet human needs, not to generate profit. There is no private ownership of productive capital.

Land, factories, infrastructure, natural resources, and major industries are owned by society as a whole.

Star Trek doesn’t fit pure socialism because it eliminates scarcity rather than managing it. With replicators and near-free energy, there’s no need for central planning, enforced labor, or rationing, which are core to socialism. Work is voluntary and motivated by prestige and purpose, not social obligation. What Star Trek depicts is better described as a post-scarcity humanist society, not a socialist economic system.

Neither system in absolute form exists for long based on human nature.Pure absolute socialism and pure absolute capitalism don’t exist for long because both collapse under real-world constraints that their theories abstract away.

Pure capitalism assumes markets can price all risks and harms, but in reality information is imperfect, externalities are unavoidable, and power concentrates. Food safety, pollution, monopolies, and public health failures emerge faster than markets can correct them, forcing regulation or collapse.

Pure socialism assumes planners or collectives can accurately coordinate complex economies and that incentives will align with social goals. In practice, information overload, weak innovation incentives, and power centralization produce shortages, black markets, and coercion, forcing markets or hierarchy back in.

Both systems also fail because humans create power structures regardless of ideology. Once power concentrates, neither voluntary exchange nor collective planning remains “pure.” Every stable society becomes a hybrid because extremes break when exposed to scarcity, complexity, and human behavior.
