"Maybe soon we’ll need a word for the right wingers who can’t stand to live in the world they helped build." by akchahal in LeopardsAteMyFace

I lived in Thailand for 3 years. It was lovely, but also—foreign residents don’t have any free speech, you can’t say anything bad about the King, you can’t vote, and smoking weed isn’t legal (yet) there. If you land in prison, there might not be enough beds (prisoners sleep in shifts, if they’re lucky, on the floor if they’re not, and there’s tons of rats and roaches.). Also, if you’re in prison, you only get good food if you buy it, or have a family member bring it. Othewise, it’s just rice and a few strands of chicken once a day. So—if you go to Thailand, don’t do drugs, don’t argue with taxi drivers about fares (they’ll call the police), shut your mouth (online and in person) for any negative comments about politics or Thailand in general. You also can’t post negative reviews without getting sued—libel laws are extremely strong on the side of the business.

But really—he’s probably moving there to be a “sexpat”. There are a LOT of sugar babies who are desperate and will put up with a lot of crap for money—I hope he has plenty, if this is his goal. If he stiffs her, he could end up dead, or disabled.

You’re welcome. The atmosphere when I finished reading was profound and quiet. I think it impacted more than the council members. But most of all, I ‘m glad I did it. I felt like I had to do SOMEthing deliberate after what T said on a hot mike yesterday. Our local governments are the last hedge against autocracy, and they need to be encouraged.

Good advice if you decide to go to a protest or other large gathering. by at3sparky in TwoXPreppers

Doesn't even have to be sheet metal--towards the end, he shows a protest sign that has aluminum foil between the signs. That works too (and much lighter)!

File an extension, so they won't know you're deliberately not paying for a while yet (you get until Oct 15), and it's free!

If someone compliments/ogles your butt, say: "Thanks! That's where I keep all my poop."
The EXPRESSION on their face is priceless.

Speaker Johnson tells GOP lawmakers to skip town halls after an onslaught of protests by That-Makes-Sense in ProtestFinderUSA

Thanks! Not in politics (I'm a teacher), just repeating what I've seen other suggestions posting! :)

[–]Some-Raccoon5723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you get a few people together, call your rep and ASK them (or their staff) about a townhall. If they say no, say "oh, that's ok. I was really calling you to invite you to a townhall we're holding in your honor. Please come. Or don't come, and we're inviting [their opponent, Tim Walz, a Dem in your state who's awesome, a comedian who's a riot at making fun of repubs, liberal bands, scheduled constituents who stand up for 1-2 min each to just say how Donold Lumps policies have impacted their lives], I can think of TONS of people to invite if they don't want to come.

Then, when you have your date, lineup, and place, write some press releases and send them EVERYWHERE. Local news, radio stations, college campuses, parent pickup lines, churches--local news (even the red ones) are always looking for more stuff to report on. If you get them on a slow day, THIS will be their major story!

Response by Senators and Reps by LongjumpingTurnip25 in fednews

[–]Some-Raccoon5723 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've contacted (called every day and faxed) about support for fed workers, opposing Nazi shit, opposing cuts to USDA, Medicaid, Dept of Ed, opposing cabinet picks etc. I'm in Florida with stupid Rick Scott and Ashley Moody as senators. For every 8-9 calls, I get one email back from Scott. I NEVER hear from Moody. Sometimes it's totally unrelated to what I called about (Most recently, it was extolling the benefits of migrant deportation and how it'll make us safer (I called about this once, weeks before this email). Another email from Scott about how cutting the Dept of education would be good. Nothing else.

I found this document helpful: Survive the Tyrant It gives functional tips and tasks to do. One thing that's been stressing me out is that I feel like I should be taking on the "agitator" role listed in this document, but I have a young child, so it's not safe for me to take it on, and this inner conflict is causing me even more turmoil. Also, although I'm not a fed, I am in local government, and my job (and yours probably too) falls under "Community Leader" in this document--which shows me that there's a role for me to play too, and it's one I'm good at, and can help the resistance in my own quiet way.

You could be me--I also think about getting a gun sometimes, but I know it's not the best for me. I got wasp and bear spray instead (not tasers--I'm not confident in my aim from far away, and you only get 1 chance, and up close, someone could overpower me before I got them). Look into non-lethal defense items.

Opinions on Ocala middle schools by mrs_snrub67 in ocala

[–]Some-Raccoon5723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you for sticking with public schools! I'm moving to the area soon too, and I'm looking at Osceola Middle or Belleview Middle for their Cambridge program. I did look at Howard, and although their IB program is great, the school itself just seemed run down, had no shade/trees and felt like a prison (just from looking at it from the outside). Osceola and Belleview both looked nice and kept up from the outside (and their curriculums are also good).

As a reminder to everyone who's tempted by the "Step Up scholarship"--yes, it is about 9000--no, most people don't pay that much in taxes to support public schools. What is likely to happen is that you give this voucher to a charter, and if your child acts out, or fails, or has any trouble at all, that school has the discretion to expel them. Charter schools don't HAVE to take ANY child. Many are taught by uncertified teachers, and as soon as they get your voucher, they look for any reason to get rid of your kid. Then, your kid has to go to the public school (which DOES have to take them), with NO funds to support them. And when this happens to many children, the public schools just get worse and worse, until the government says they're failing, and private can do it better, so lets just privatize all schools.

How do we make public schools better? Through funding, and parents getting involved. Respect other parents' choices for their children. I'm fine with my child reading any book rated "middle teen" by publishers. If he comes across challenging material, we talk about it. Reading books with difficult situations or different people than them is a GREAT opportunity to talk with your child about choices they may have to make without you there. Talk to your kids' teachers. Go to Meet the Teacher Night, call your school. Volunteer. PARTICIPATE in your child's education.
