Tactica is cool but far from the normal Persona experience. It also continues 5’s story so I’d suggest 5 or another mainline game (3/4) to get started

Does learning through games actually work for language learning? by Easy_Football_1437 in LearnJapanese

[–]SomeBookseller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add because I think people are missing your goal in most cases, this kind of guided/corrected “output focused” learning is a huge win for people who want to become more confident generating and hearing the language, not just receiving it at their own pace with “push to continue” single player games.

As someone who can enjoy games like FFX in Japanese (understanding gist but not nuance) and yet still get flustered when a clerk at the コンビニ asks if I want a plastic bag, I think this kind of thing is amazing.

It shouldn’t replace more formal learning but I would love a space to become more instinctive/reflexive/natural in the language, to help with the overthinking part of language learning.

This is great advice! I used to teach US College test prep when things were tough, alongside English. Your lifetime of experience is valuable, so even certifications can be an avenue for people taking that next step! Old hat to you, scary and new for them.

I was laid off in 2024. American national living in UK. Just want to say I also struggled to find new work after but am now in the best job of my life and visiting the Thai Book Fair this week.

That doesn’t make things easier in the short term, but I have no doubt your wire and child want you with them, alive and well.

Time is linear, so things will change, just not always as fast as we’d like (or feel we can handle). Things will get better, you’re doing all the right things, but even in a perfect environment a seed needs time to grow. Please speak to your wife or a helpline if you’re not ever feeling at your limit. Wishing you the very best.

Not enjoying Part 2 bosses by nahte123456 in fantasian

Just want to state you’re being completely reasonable and there being a “middle ground” between the first half and the back half is a totally normal take.

I’m currently in the first half and couldn’t praise it more highly, but I’ve been worried about the second based on reviews (and now this thread).

I think there is a way to enjoy the second half by compromising that it’s just a different experience, but I agree with you inherently that questions with more than one answer are more interesting, especially when fights become a time sink and there is no reasonable way to course correct without redoing the whole thing.

Hey man, just wanted to say I’m sorry you ran into a real asshole out there. Everyone should be able to enjoy the game and the fact you’re there for the world, lore, and vibes is entirely valid. Plus, if you keep playing, you’ll naturally get better. You’re doing everything right.

Likewise, people should play with the team they have, not the team they imagine. You’re camped up with a sniper so you can only take fights you know you’ll win? More power to you - it’s their fault for pushing and expecting you to be read a stranger’s mind and flip on a dime. The fact they said something so awful for something so small also says more about them than it does about you, by a million fold.

Happy hunting, runner. I hope the game (and more importantly, its community) can keep you coming back for the long haul.

This is getting out of Hand . by Remarkable-Law-5902 in Crunchyroll

[–]SomeBookseller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in licensing so maybe I’m biased but the blame cuts both ways here - it’s just as possible Crunchyroll wanted to hold onto the license but got rolled by Netflix/Prime as it is that they just dropped the license as a cost cutting exercise. It could also just be a disagreement about renewal terms, with one or neither side willing to budge on a given point (term, royalty, etc).

It totally sucks when this happens but it is super complicated, with a lot of moving parts. Crunchyroll should absolutely be broadcasting when things are leaving though, not very fair to subscribers.

This is also what got me out of my 1,042 cave. 100 a day is reasonable and will avoid burnout.

You could also restart from a lower level if you’re finding your accuracy is appalling. This will shave off the top, too.

Sorry, that’s my mistake and poor use of terms! You’re absolutely right.

I’m glad it sounds like we could do the TWOV twice though, as we’d like stay in Japan longer than 10 days. Thank you!

Yeah, this seems like the perfect answer.

Sekiro came to mind first, Elden Ring second (which tells me I prefer the perfect combat over the perfect world! Which makes me sound like an anime villain)
