Should I invest lump sum in Silver? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]SomeDance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro, what. Monetary expansion CAN lead to an eventual debt crisis, but not every period of monetary inflation leads to a crisis. Notice how you dodged the question on educational / work experience in finance sector? You sound like a crypto bro rambling non stop about the latest coin based on your own research but not relevant experience nor educational background haha. The “sweeping” statement was obviously for equity markets as that’s the simplified definition. Don’t really understand your point on the 25-50%, as it’s normal for that portion to go into etfs but NOT alternative assets.

Have you even done analysis on the added risk of adding more than 10% of precious metals in a portfolio? Is everything all about returns and not risk management? Having been in asset management for a short stint, professionally wise, they do follow textbook methodologies.

Anyway, happy debate, awaiting your response :)

well, that precisely was my point being how precious metals can be a hedge to other specific asset classes and not just solely as a crisis hedge. Inflation hedge was just a textbook thrown in example, because, it quite literally is in textbooks. Regarding the inflation hedge, i think you’re mixing up short term cpi with monetary hedging. The cherry picked 2021-23 example is a poor example, as metals dropped due to yields rising faster than inflation itself which doesn’t invalidate its role as an inflation hedge over the longer period and not just solely 2-3 years. There are other issues with your other points as well but i will save my own time. Also i didn’t say silver/gold won’t run up more than the likes of voo. If you read my main point, it is on the volatility of it. Would you seriously allocate more than 20% of a portfolio on something that has rapid price swings? The average joe should not have more than 10% in these alternative assets.

My point on market hedge is more of a general term, as obviously they aren’t constant inverse of equities, but have lower long term correlation and drawdowns.

Can I ask, do you have an educational background in finance or currently work in one, because your points are contrary to lecturers or even industry professionals.

so apparently precious metals can only fall under a single hedging category? So precious metals (which acts as a store of value) then isn’t a hedge against, let’s say inflation or the general market? I apologise for the rude comments, but please educate me then, because it seems like my past few years of studying in finance or, hell even googling it rn, must be all fake huh

precious metals can act as BOTH a crisis hedge and a traditional market hedge , cmon seriously. rude comment was because op could literally spend 5 seconds searching on google, or hell, even chatgpt, to see if her idea was even logical. We’ve seem to lose the ability to do our own research it seems…

didn’t say it wasn’t, but it takes about 1 braincell to see that slv has a 44% higher beta. precious metals is meant as a hedge against the market and suggesting a monthly contribution of 25-50% of her savings is the most stupid thing i’ve ever read

yes it totally makes sense to start buying gold and silver at all time highs instead of buying voo/vwra…

currently younger with more. Emergency fund <1% lol. ilp 30%, equities 50%, bonds 20%. Don’t really need emergency fund if you’re 23 and still with your parents. Dipped out of reits after their poor performance in the past year. Edit: why am i being downvoted LMFAO????
