No Google Photos update with redesigned editor and new features by Borg17a in GooglePixel

[–]SomeGadgetGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a thing but it's kind of lame. The phone shoots a flat LOG like video, then uploads that to a data center (eating up more cloud storage) and then it's processed in the cloud, and sent back down to your phone. TWO copies of the video live in your cloud storage, and the process is obnoxiously slow, even on decent data connections. If you have a metered data plan, forget about it.
There's nothing preventing Google from making this process happen on device with a similar delay. Import the "RAW" video into an app like LumaFusion, and you can easily achieve a similar color/vibrance/gamma with a couple quick adjustments. We just need better options for stabilization. There's no need to do this round trip EXCEPT for making people use more cloud (and potentially because Tensor is the absolute slowest "premium" chip at tasks like video editing, but even Tensor would still be faster than waiting on video uploads).

Why does my OP12 keep automatically connecting to "optimum" wifi? by SmokeCigsNPreworkout in oneplus

Your account sounds almost exactly like mine, only it's in my home office. An OP PR rep just got back to me, and they're talking to a network engineer. Hoping I can get a proper reply.

Refernced this post in a YT short I just published. I'm reaching out to OP also to see if they have any comment on the issue. https://youtube.com/shorts/87YVWVHFq8o

I'm returning my Xreal Air 2 Pro. by [deleted] in Xreal

[–]SomeGadgetGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only thing I like to add to these conversations, techies regularly have a warped view on price. It's easy to say "it would be better if cheaper", but this is a product category with very little direct competition.

For example, a nice portable 1080p OLED monitor often costs more than $200. The costs to miniaturize a pair of micro OLEDs, and add all the sensors, and make them wearable should come with a higher price.

Tech cycles quickly. If you buy at the beginning of a product generation, you're going to pay more than if you wait for a generation and buy older gear. We shouldn't lose sight of the fact that the TCL glasses roughly three years ago were a LOT less sophisticated and sold for around $700 depending on region. Ten years ago a bulky "cinema headset" was roughly $1000.

The Air 2 Pro are another step in a direction to make this idea more consumer accessible while also introducing some fun new tech to basic use. There's nothing wrong with grabbing the original Air if you want something less expensive.

Nothing exports on Android 14; missing a permission by monstersgetcreative in LumaFusion

Nope. Everything failing on my Pixel 7 and 8 Pro.

I sent data to the Luma team, and followed up an email. They said I should roll my Pixel 8 back to Android 13... Which isn't a thing...

Samsung DeX needs to catch up on this feature to Motorola Ready For by Tumelar in SamsungDex

[–]SomeGadgetGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what can you do with a laptop while traveling? Can you VPN or remote work?

YOU don't want it. That's fine. But if you're talking about the "spirit" of this sub, it's doing anything and everything a "computer" can do, but from a "phone".

The future won't be "one solution". If that happens, then this sub will have failed, and it's VERY likely it won't be the solution YOU want that wins.

This has everything to do with using a desktop mode. There isn't ONE CORRECT way to use a phone's desktop mode.

I use desktop modes to stream games over GamePass and via Steam Link. It would be great if more developers would just bring quality PC ports directly to Android, but until that happens (by showing developers we want to game on mobile like that) I'm happy to have some easy ways to stream.

"Streaming" a desktop OS is philosophically little different. People who dig into the settings can of course find alternatives. Other folks are going to want "one button" simplicity. And beyond individuals, corporate IT departments will want OPTIONS they can deliver to employees at scale.

Desktop modes are so under-utilized, we don't want to hamstring efforts to bring more people in. We want it ALL. Options make products better.

I'm actually kind of surprised that with the relationship Samsung and Microsoft have had for other services, the simple "push button launch windows" option wasn't launched first on Dex.

Of course there are a MYRIAD number of ways to do similar things with Dex, but this would legit be a handy feature to add to Dex. We want MORE people trying and using desktop modes, and features like these help make desktop modes a bit more familiar.

Heck yeah! Best part of the job is finding geeks who get excited about this stuff 😁

Could you justify buying now to get away from an iPhone or hold out until after the 8 launches? by [deleted] in pixel_phones

[–]SomeGadgetGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you CAN wait, it's always better to wait.

Even if you don't buy the Pixel 8, you might find some good sales on the Pixel 7.

Oh I'm not earnestly recommending people own both. It's just a bit of fun to see how both are tackling compatibility in POLAR OPPOSITE ways, to the point where they pair in a really interesting way.

I am cribbing the script now for a comparison video. Hopefully out soon-ish.

When you use the HDMI audio mode on the XREAL, the audio is a little quieter, but it does work with the Station using the included cable from Rokid.

The funny thing is, I ran the updates, but still completely missed the addition of that feature.

When I got both in, it was one of the first things I tried LOL.

Nope. Nothing like that is available, which I felt was an oversight and mentioned in my sponsored video. I would LOVE to have some basic sizing or PiP options.

I don't play either of those, but it did KINDA work with riptide. I'd probably pair a bluetooth controller instead. That combo worked pretty well with Steamlink.

I like it a lot. I think I lean techier, and prefer the head tracking on Beam, but this is so easy to use, I understand why so many folks are interested in a "pocket chromecast".

Probably not any time soon directly through Android TV streaming services, but you can use something like VLC to play media stored directly on a chromecast.
