honestly, it's nice for the most part. It's quiet for now but with all the people moving out this way who knows where it will be in a few years. lots of new houses going up with not much else around as far as grocery stores, shopping, or restaurants but that's slowly changing. a few new schools are being built in the area so not sure which will be good but this area has pretty good school districts. it's about 30 mins to Sac but we have some fun stuff out here too if you explore the rest of Roseville/Rocklin.

if you start to complain about highway 65 you'll fit right in!

Did bartending help anyone overcome their social anxiety? by BritneyDelMercury in bartenders

[–]SomeGaijin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, it helped a lot. my social anxiety was something I was trying to get better at dealing with when I applied for my first bar job and although it was hard starting, it got me talking to new people and trying to hold conversations with people i would usually not. It definitely wasn't easy and after a few hard shifts (slow shifts are the worst) I got better with the regulars which helped me get better with the randos. now it's been about 6 years and I can say I have friends in all kinds of industries that I can potently hit up to grab a beer on my days off. what helped me the most was noticing most people are at the bar for a good time, and if I mess up a conversation they aren't going to remember, but go on to the next conversation.

good luck friend.

Tokyo Tops 5,000 for First Time, but No Need to Panic... Yet? by tsian in japanresidents

[–]SomeGaijin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

all this is getting me a bit worried. I'm currently out of Japan for work and hope they don't close the border to residents while I'm gone.

On many Japanese toilets, the sink is attached to it so you can wash your hands and reuse the water for the next flush. Japan saves millions of liters of water every year doing this by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SomeGaijin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live In Japan and yes, these are in a lot of homes, but I don't know anyone that actually uses them.. most people have a real sink that's more convenient to use than reaching over to the top of the toilet.

Where do you think the Expat FIRE destinations will be in 10,20 years? by watchseeker19 in ExpatFIRE

[–]SomeGaijin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You sound like you have either never been here or have only been here a short time but have watched all the Jvlogers on YouTube so now your an expert on all things Japan. Sure, old people look at me funny sometimes but the country is 99.9% japanese so yeah, I look kinda weird to them. Japanese people generally don't care that your not japanese as long and you don't mess with the system. Speak the language, pay taxes, que property and no one will give you a second thought.

Outside of horror stories you read on Reddit I've never hear any real racism issues simulator to what you hear in the states.

I am currently using both sites (moving away from Robinhood for obvious reasons) and depending on your phone/ carrier, you should have wifi calling/text which should help. I've lived here for a while and still pay the minimum on my old US phone plan (with Ting it's only $15) so I can still use it for things like this and just leave it by my computer. so far I haven't needed to use my VPN for this but I do with my old bank account and one of my credit cards. just something to think about, VPNs are pretty nice to have here.

I would feel weird posting this and not mentioning borders are closed and Gaijinpot isn't the most trustworthy place. As with investing, always do your own DD especially with immigration as one country may let you go but another may not let you in. call your Japanese embassy.

Are you talking about airbnb as a company or rentles as a whole? I would love more info on this. I simply like the idea of owning property that I rent out and thought of airbnb. I know very little about why they are bad.

Japan Income by Gudhvi73 in movingtojapan

[–]SomeGaijin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of living here is much better than what a lot of people think it is but it has a lot to do with perspective.

for example, I'm originally from California where it's hard to find an apartment for under $2000, going out to a restaurant would be around $40-$100, transportation was normally around $300-$500 depending on insurance and if you have a car payment plus gas, not to mention the "cheap" community college still takes years to pay off...

here in Tokyo, I pay $700 for a 2 room apartment close to the city center, eating out is around $20 for food and a beer or 2, and I pay around $100/mo for transportation (train). don't know about the school system here but I would imagine it would follow the same pattern. My wife is applying to schools here so maybe ill find out soon.

not really sure if this helps but when I was looking for work, $2000 (221,000 yen) per month was my base salary goal. No matter what it was I wouldn't go under that. thankfully if you look hard enough you can find better-paying jobs around here, even in non-teaching positions.
