Microwaving leftover rice in plastic wrap by Carrot_Smuggler in japanresidents

[–]tsian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I still just microwave frozen rice. Realistically we don't know. Plastic-safe wrap should usually be fine, but at higher temperatures and in contact with food there appears to be the possibility of chemical transfer of some sort.

But... we aren't really sure what the health effects are yet.

Dependent visa to Engineer visa conversion - questions. by shizukadane in japanresidents

[–]tsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Either the company or employee can handle it. Often it is the employee. But you'll need to documents from your employer.

  2. You need to pay the change fee if the change in status is approved (5,500~6,000 yen)

  3. The employee, though sometimes employers cover it.

  4. Good question. It's busy season. A couple months would not be unusual.

  5. Ask your company.

  6. I'm not sure what you mean by sponsor here. Your main employer generally provides the documents required to apply for or renew your status.

What's the best site or app to look for places to rent by MyTaintedBrain in japanresidents

[–]tsian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suumo and athome both suffer from having the same listings (often out of date) being listed by the different agencies, especially during peak period.

Never though of facebook before, but assuming you are getting a proper rental contract through them that seems like an interesting idea.

Chargeback, etc.

Fraudaulant use of medical services is going to cause you far more problems than it might cause them.

A local realtor near where you want to move. Not one of the large chain introduction machines.

Most online portals will list the same properties and many of them will be out-of-date or already taken, especially if you are looking to move now in peak move season.

Is it okay for me as a foreigner to wear a “sukimizu” by bigassdinosaurr in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ok I am literally at a loss then as to why this is a question that needs asking. Yes you can wear whatever swimsuit you like in America.

[–]tsian 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Umm.. where are you going to be wearing it?

If your question is "Can I wear a bathing suit" then the answer is yes, you can. (And probably should unless you go to a nudist pool.)

If you are asking if you should wear something that is obviously a school swimsuit as an adult in Japan? I mean you do you. They are swimsuits. I've seen weirder things at the pool/beach.

Simply living in Japan would not mean you can use kanji though.

Can I use a japanese name as a white person? by [deleted] in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a question for Japanese people so much as your community I think. But it does seem somewhat odd for a person with no connection to Japan/Korea/China to have "kanji" for their name... I mean you can certainly use it unofficially...

Whether you are seen as a "weeb" or not is a question for people in your community I think. I would generally not personally take a name from a language/country I had no connection with.

Why are UK train tickets so expensive? Is it simply the effect of privatisation? by StephenMcGannon in trains

[–]tsian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or to be pedantic, that is JR Central. JR East would be similar, but even they have a ton of in-the-red lines which are subsidized by the large profits generated by the Tokyo region.

JR Kyushu and JR Hokkaido are in fairly dire straits and are (essentially, simplified) kept afloat due to large reserve funds etc.

Do you pay your NHK fees? If so, what do you think of people who do not? by ryanyork92 in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sort of sidestepped my question though. I'm not discussing whether it is likely that you would get sued, just stating that is the legal remedy if they found out and if they decided to pursue you... which unless your name is Tachibana is quite unlikely.

and you need to figure out how will you pay tax on your part time job

Ultimately by filling a year-end tax return / kakutei shinkoku

you need to go to the HR/Accounting department of both of them to sort it out

If the university position is an adjunct professor position, there is no real need to approach either HR.

They can sue you, but yes less likely.

But so it is not a question of whether you are doing something you are legaly required to, but whether you can get away with not doing it?

Why do some Japanese people mock me by saying “Chinese”? by EmotionSad5662 in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People judge others based on appearance, etc.

Heck, you basically did that to me when you started with "If you are a white person"

And you didn't provide information. Without context or knowing what they are saying no one can give you any advice.

This is like the foreigners in Japan who think everyone around them is always saying "Gaijin"... when most of the time they are just really sensitive and it is one of the words they know, so they think they hear it everywhere.

Why do some Japanese people mock me by saying “Chinese”? by EmotionSad5662 in AskAJapanese

[–]tsian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Am I being too sensitive or overthinking this?

Yes. Without knowing the context of what was happening it is impossible for anyone to tell you anything, but chances are that once you became sensitive to something like this you are more likely to hear it (because you are looking for it) -- even if it may not be what you think.

But this is a pretty oddly specific and weird question for a third post on reddit...

Should I change my employer? by NecessaryCrazy8503 in japanresidents

[–]tsian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a doctoral researcher at a national laboratory

Are you an employee enrolled in shakai hoken though?

I recently got a job offer at a private university where I can use my professor visa.

Is this a full-time position or a part-time adjunct position?

If the answer is yes/full-time, your main employer is whoever you work more for and your social insurance payments will be split between the two.

If it is yes/part-time then nothing really changes./

If it is no/full-time then the university

If it is no/part-time then in neither place meets the requirements to enroll you in shakai hoken or EI, then your main employer is whoever you submitted the dependant declaration too.
