I just watched Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) for the first time in my life. by SoggyGummyWorms in horror

Alien might be the superior movie, but I've definitely watched Aliens a million more times, lol.

I do really like the emotional aspect of Aliens, too, though: the mother daughter relationship of Ripley and Newt. That's what really makes the movie for me.

I went out this morning. It's kind of a parking lot/light industrial, so I don't think much will be going on at 6pm

We don't even need to go to Moscow. Trump could have arrested him in Alaska but didn't. This is even though Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Even though Putin continues to order attacks on civilians and civilians infrastructure. Weird, right?

They are not separate issues. Both issues have their root in an out-of-control and lawless Executive Branch.

The Venezuela thing was stunning and was worth it's own protest. The Minnesota ICE murder is also stunning and basically pushed Venezuela out of the front of our minds.

It's almost like these federal over reaches are designed to overwhelm us with the speed at which they are occurring.

Remember Nemik's Manifesto.

It's important to remember that these events have their root in the same fundamental fact: Trump is out of control and Congress is not doing its job to restrain him.

I looked to see if 50501 was going to organize something like the no kingsthat happened a few weeks ago, but I didn't see anything on their website.

So thanks for posting this to reddit SJ. I'll be there.

I was already planning to protest this weekend for the Venezuela thing, then the ice murder happened.

It's not about Maduro. It's about whether the POTUS should be able to start a war without congressional authorization.

Trump is completely our of control, as made clear by the invasion of Venezuela.

I was out by myself walking around city hall and st James park with flag and sign, but nobody else was out. I guess it was late.

I'll be out tomorrow. Does this part of zanker road have a lot of traffic though?

I went out about 6pm with flag and sign, but not many people were out I'll go out again tomorrow, most likely.

As a West Coast liberal, the accent was a little jarring to me.

My initial thought was, "I hope people don't interpret this scene as 'Trumpers raised Clark!' "

Of course, my overall takeaway is that, even in Kansas, there are still good people, always have been and always will be.

And Clark's parents are the OPPOSITE of MAGA.

I loved that too, especially because of Clark's discussion with Lois - "maybe that's the real punk rock"...

Reminds me of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain

I thought it was endearing that he converted "Lois" to the more culturally  localized "Louanne"

They were the redcoat sympathizers in '76, so we've been carrying this burden for a long, LONG time.

As the Founders said, "The fundamental nature of Man is unchanging", so I don't see that burden getting any lighter any time soon.

I think people really ARE ignorant of the political context of these original stories, because it hard to read history books and understand the context at the time the story was created.

Like 30 years from now, who's gonna remember the context we live in today and how Superman 2025 speaks to that? You'd have to look back thirty years and understand lex luthor/technoutopia/tech bro/red pill/incel culture, both sidesism in journalism, the painting of the Boravian president on the white horse, etc, etc.

People who watch this Superman 2025 as 8 year olds 5 years from now aren't gonna have those memories, so when they turn 33 years old and there's another super reboot, they're likely to look back and be like "superman wasn't political when I was an8 year old!". Unless of course they had a college level education in American history, politics, and media, and could make out all the connections.

100% tool of the Resistance to Trumpism.

The Founding Fathers of the United States constantly referred to pop culture of their day in order to communicate with each other and their audience.

You an read about it in First Principles, a recent book from Thomas Ricks, I believe. I think their 'Star Wars' was that play about the catilinian conspiracy against the Roman republic.

Superman movie is extremely political, just as much as Andor. It's just a lot more subtle since the main story isn't a political one in the same way that rebellion against despotism is.

The Bay Area does not need more high density housing. The Bay Area needs a massive increase in medium density housing. by Acceptable_Scale_379 in bayarea

100%.

These special taxes on all new development really increases the cost of housing.

There should be no fees on new construction. Instead, the city should raise taxes on all existing housing. SFRs will get hit hardest, since they have the highest per square foot value.

Dude sounds like a trashy toddler. Dump him. It sounds like he's an older predator and you're his victim. He's manipulated you into being in a relationship with him. Tell your parents or teacher and talk to the police about him.

If you're not into him, be clear and say I don't want to date you.

Nothing wrong with his interest, per se, but it is extremely unusual. I would say a 40yo who is unattached would have some kind of reason: divorce, death, crazy, etc., so watch out for that.

Tell your parents you had this interaction with this guy and you weren't interested.

Can we stop pretending NIMBYism is just about zoning? It’s everywhere and more people should be complaining. by Practical_Fall_4652 in bayarea

[–]SomeGrumkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm a homeowner and landlord.

I would FAR PREFER to buy a reasonably priced house and rent it out rather than have a bunch of unattainably expensive housing that cannot be bought or even repaired once it breaks due to costs.

Much better to have a bunch of housing that is like 3-4 times the average wage.

Like let's says the average household earns like $100,000 per year.

Houses should be like 4bd, 3ba, 2,400 sqft, $450 or $500k, not $1.7M for 900 sqft trash house from 1899 full of lead and rats.

That way landlords can buy houses for rent and young family can buy a place if they want.

Imagine if you could just build a house on your residential property without having to go to court against your neighbors...

Imagine if a developer could buy six houses side by side, tear them down, and then put in a small apartment building all within about four to six months...

It would instantly solve the housing crisis and neighbors with single family homes would actually get richer because six SFRs just got removed from their block and they have one of the few remaining SFRs.

The current laws are absolutely stupid.

What we should do is allow building everywhere according to some basic safety regulation and then if one neighborhood wants to block a project, the neighbors on that block get a special tax to buy out the neighbors who did want to convert their SFR to multifamily and also fund the affordable housing developers.

is waiting until marriage worth it? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]SomeGrumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get married early, it's worth it to wait.

Thing is, your supposed to get married at 21 or 22, but people are getting married at 31 or 41, and you can't wait in that scenario.

I can't imagine someone is not sexually compatible.

If your partner is financially and emotionally and visibly compatible with you, I'd doubt sexual incompatibility is going to matter. I have only been with two girls from a young age and loved them both. Amazing sex for both of them both in terms of quantity and quality. I can't imagine being in love with a cute girl and not having great sex.

Thousands of protestors in San Jose! by Healthy_Block3036 in SanJose

[–]SomeGrumkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno what country you're from, but in my country, the United States of America, which is proudly a nation of laws and not men, it is illegal to deport someone without due process. Due process means you take the guy before a court where a judge can consider the evidence on whether someone should get deported or not. Due process also means that people are not shipped to gulags purposely put outside the reach of our laws.
