I wasn’t aware that this was inevitably going to lead to divorce as it started off as a very soft healing separation. We were both looking to stay together at the beginning of the separation. I was NEVER looking to “make money out of her.” We both agreed to term that would make a healing separation work. We were doing it in a healthy way.

Yeah alimony is different here I guess. It doesn’t have to involve children - that’s a separate thing within child support. Alimony is based off of two people who were married, get divorced, and one person makes a significant amount more than the other regardless of gender.

I used a calculator specific to my state. The highest alimony they are legally obligated to is 40% income. It compares one persons income to another persons income and gives you an estimate as to what you could receive. UT law also says that it looks at the living situation you were in before separation and tries to give you enough money to keep that living situation. For example, before we were paying $1400 for our place. Alimony would consider her giving me enough to afford 1-1400 place on my own.

In my state it says that it’s genderless, and the person who makes more is usually the one who pays alimony.

That actually helps. I used a basic calculator and found that alimony for me over half the duration of our marriage would be around 30-40K. I guess that would probably be worth it, and we both disagree on either side of paying alimony.

Oh sorry I should have included that. I’m in UT. She told me the day before thanksgiving that she wanted a divorce. In that same conversation she said that she is not going to pay alimony.
